Oudtshoorn’s mayor Gordon April will appear in the town’s magistrate’s court for a second time on February 3, the Hawks said.
He is facing charges of theft, illegal use of a municipal vehicle and intimidation, investigator Frank Tolken said on Thursday.
April and his co-accused, Raymond Wagenaar, head of the Oudtshoorn municipality’s department of storm water and streets, made their first court appearance on December 23.
The charges of theft and use of a municipal vehicle were laid by the chairman of the Oudtshoorn branch of AfriForum, George Kersop. The charge of intimidation was laid by co-workers.
The two were not asked to plead.
Western Cape police spokesman, Malcolm Pojie, said April was accused of stealing sand and stone, which was delivered to his home in Dysselsdorp by municipal workers in a work vehicle.
Wagenaar allegedly gave the instruction for the delivery. Municipal workers who witnessed the incident said they were later intimidated by the two.
