Asamoah – No favourites for AFCON

Kwadwo Asamoah says there are no favourites for the Africa Cup of Nations

Ghana’s Kwadwo Asamoah has said that this year’s African Cup of Nations tournament could spring a surprise as he believes there are no favourites.

The midfielder spoke to FIFA.com where he confirmed his belief that out of the 16 qualified teams, each one has an equal amount of opportunity to make a difference at the tournament.

Despite the bookies having earmarked Ghana’s Black Stars, Ivory Coast and the Teranga Lions of Senegal as potential tournament winners, the Udinese player believes it will be a balanced tournament.

“I do not see any favorite. We all start on the same level, so of course there could be a big surprise,” noted the 23-year-old.

Nevertheless, Asamoah has reiterated his faith in his team as he feels they are strong enough to go all the way.

“We are a good team, without any phenomenons but with many quality players. If we are compact and gritty as [coach Goran] Stevanovic asks, we will be dangerous for anyone to play.

“It is true that strong and successful teams will be missing, but it still won’t be easy to win the continental tournament. Not even South Africa will be there, but there are always new teams who will make life hard for anyone. All the teams who qualified for the finals deserved it,” he concluded.
