Chelsea midfielder Franck Lampard celebrates his last minute winning goal
Frank Lampard and Ramires cancelled out Stephen Ward’s equalizer to give Chelsea all three points as they edged out Wolves 2-1 at the Molineux Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Both sides went into the game needing a win as they were back off defeats in their previous encounters, prior to that Wolves had not won in five games, losing two and drawing three. Their last win was a 2-1 victory over Sunderland on 4 December at the same venue, Molineux.
Chelsea had not won in four Premier League games, its longest period without a win this season; its last victory was the 2-1 win over Manchester City on the 12 December.
In the early stages of this encounter, Chelsea, who for the first time since 2001-02 season have started a calendar year outside of the top four, looked the brighter of the two sides.
In the 4th minute, Juan Mata looked destined to catch out Wayne Hennessey with a quick free-kick but the Spaniard puts the ball wide with the Wolves ‘keeper out of position.
In the 8th minute, again Mata was freed up by Torres and had a one-on-one opportunity but the keeper was quick to respond and saves with his feet.
Kevin Doyle looked to becoming more and more isolated for Wolves up front, Hammil and Forde struggled to create anything in the wide positions.
The game looked to have settled down following that rush of yellow cards, Chelsea tried to dominate possession once more but Wolves remain staunch in defense.
Frustration clearly began to show itself for Chelsea. Wolves were arguably better than the Blues in the first half and Torres continues to look lost in the attack.
In the second half AVB must have spoken some sense into the Blues game as they looked deadlier and they wait too long for the opener.
In the 51st minute Ramires gave Chelsea the lead with a deft precise finish starting with his back to the goal from a corner kick.
Chelsea looks much more comfortable now after the goal.
In the 69th minute, Lampard gave Torres a perfect position to take a shot but the Spaniard’s lack of confidence continued to show. Instead of shooting outside of the box, Torres tries to dribble past three defenders to get closer and is stopped.
In the 85th minute, Jarvis got the ball into the box and Steven Ward finished on the volley for the equalizer.
Although Wolves happiness was shortened when Lampard got a close range cross and finished in front of goal with a powerful volley shot.
Chelsea held on to a 2-1 win.
