Importers of second hand vehicles in the country have kicked against government\u2019s plan to pass a law that will ban the importation of such vehicles.<\/p>\n
They describe the move as a misplaced priority which could double the already worsening unemployment situation in the country.<\/p>\n
Environment Minister Sherry Aryeetey announced the plan at the ongoing climate change conference in Durban, South Africa as one of many measures to reduce carbon emissions in government\u2019s bid to control climate change.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are going to come out with a new law that will ban the importation of second vehicles into Ghana,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve done a lot of research into these areas.\u201d<\/p>\n
But many importers Joy News spoke to expressed outrage at the minister\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s going to create unemployment; so many people will have to go astray and then be looking for other jobs and if we don\u2019t get it, it will turn that we have to find a means to eat. It\u2019s not necessary, they shouldn\u2019t ban those vehicles,\u201d he said,\u201d a second vehicles dealer said.<\/p>\n
But it makes more sense to ban used vehicles that are not road-worthy, an importer said.<\/p>\n
\u201cGovernment should just support us [businessmen].\u201d<\/p>\n
Deputy Local Government Minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has however allayed the fears of the importers.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Joy FM\u2019s Super Morning Show, Mr. Afriyie Ankrah explained government is yet to take a decision on the matter.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
