\u201cA leader\u2019s worth can be assessed by the men around him\u201d\u00a0<\/em> \u00a0Machiavelli. \u00a0\u00a0Sometimes, I feel like giving up on Ghana just as some of our founding founders who gave their lives, time, resources, freedoms and liberties to ensure that this country became a respected one.<\/p>\n Joe Appiah of blessed memory did not understand the doyen of Ghanaian politics, Joseph Boakye Danquah of blessed memory, when the latter asked the former, in his cells at the Ussher Fort Prisons, whether \u2018Ghana is worth dying for\u2019.<\/p>\n Dr. J.B. Danquah, just about a year before his second arrest and detention in 1963, wrote, \u201cAll my life, I have pinned my faith in the Ghanaian that he is sensible and is capable of thinking as a human being. I do not wish to lose my faith in Ghana. God help my faith.\u201d<\/p>\n All of us have faith in Ghana that is why we sacrifice our freedoms, liberties, risk our lives et al to do what we do in the hope that mother Ghana will be what we all want it to be.<\/p>\n I am sure that almost 48 years after what J.B. wrote, and 46 years after his death, a young journalist, Anas Armeyaw Anas, who has sacrificed his life, time and energies bringing to the fore and the attention of Ghanaians and the world, the various forms of corruption and misdeeds very much inimical to the well being of the people of this country, may raise his arms into the air and also ask, \u201cIs Ghana worth dying for?\u201d<\/p>\n Anas, my consolation to you is: Weep not child, because the centre can no longer hold and the leadership of your country is no longer at ease with fighting corruption and doing what is right in the eyes of descent minded Ghanaians. Indeed, the beautiful ones are not yet born and the ugly ones refuse to die.<\/p>\n President Mills rode on the wings of his unmitigated dislike for corruption in its totality and anything near to it.<\/p>\n Indeed he had told the world that a mere publication of any act of corruption by anybody in his government or by extension by any Ghanaian would attract his investigations.<\/p>\n Today, video evidence of corruption is aired on national televisions for the President and his men and women of integrity to see filifili, but all the man of self-imposed unbridled and impeccable integrity does is to look on helplessly.<\/p>\n Yes, what has the President done about the video evidence publicly displayed on the televisions, showing the criminal conduct of some officers from CEPS and the Police beyond his populist move to Tema to pontificate on the corruption captured by Anas?<\/p>\n Is the Attorney-General not interested in prosecuting these nation wreckers the state has employed and who are paid by the tax payer but decide to engage in acts which tend to undermine the state and rather benefit those who are supposed to protect the interest of the state?<\/p>\n Yes, I understand that evidence collected illegally cannot in itself, be used in court, but there is a window which allows the organizations to use the available evidence offered by what could legally be considered illegal evidence, to embark on investigations to verify the authenticity or otherwise of the information so made public against those persons.<\/p>\n What has been happening ever since Anas came out with the bone-breaking information on cocoa smuggling at the Western borders of this country?<\/p>\n If Prez Mills knew he was not going to do anything about the exposures at Tema, why did he rush there for the cameras to say what he said? Just to deceive Ghanaians?<\/p>\n When Anas exposed the factory at Spintex road which uses or used maggot-infested flour to prepare biscuits for our consumption under Kufuor, at least the factory was closed down for a while until the authorities became satisfied subsequently that the right things were being done.<\/p>\n In fact, I think even the punishment at the time was not deterrent enough, but something was done. Egya Atta, your abhorrence towards corruption has not being manifested in your actions.<\/p>\n Egya Atta, right under your nose, foreigners are bribing their way through officials in this country and are engaging in illegal acts of not just mining, but criminal destruction of our environment. Yes, the police and other public officers are in the know and yet nothing is being done about these.<\/p>\n In fact, some police officers are bribed to pave the way for the perpetrators of the heinous crimes in this country.<\/p>\n Egya Atta, corruption has officially been given a pride of place in your administration, where a public institution can illegally extract a whooping sum of GH\u00a2690 million from Ghanaians and yet not account publicly for those monies. Who authorized them to do that and on whose behalf?<\/p>\n Tell this country and the world your position on this rape of our resources deposited in a secret account without the knowledge of the Auditor-General who is supposed to audit all public funds?<\/p>\n Is your government piling up illegal funds to bribe its way to power come 2012? Egya Atta, what more acts of corruption would you punish than this if indeed you do not personally condone and connive with some thieves you have employed to steal from taxpayers?<\/p>\n Yes, three ministries under your watch cannot account for another whooping GH\u00a2180 million. Where is the money, Egya Atta?<\/p>\n This amount which cannot be found can more than fix all the bad roads your administration has bequeathed to the people of Sekondi-Takoradi, who are suffering from the oil curse.<\/p>\n The GH\u00a2690 million your people have stolen with your tacit approval can fix the so called \u2018Gang of four\u2019 without waiting on our new found colonial masters, the Chinese, to give us money to develop those roads.<\/p>\n In fact, the about US400 million the NPA has stolen and kept in secret accounts to be shared by the NDC is a quarter of the so-called US1.8 billion dollars you are taking from China to develop the infrastructure in the Western Region.<\/p>\n Let me also remind you that it is almost the quantum of monies which should have gone into the SADA fund for the development of the Savannah belt, if indeed you were genuinely concerned with the project. Stealing in the name of integrity.<\/p>\n Under your regime, people who are above 100 years are paid every month by the state. I would not be surprised if those people are the dying elements of the revolution whose contributions to the national agenda were to illegally confiscate people\u2019s property without recourse to the law courts. A President of integrity indeed.<\/p>\n Egya Atta, even minors of between 6-15 years are receiving salaries every month in this country; are you aware? Have you also heard the news about the National Youth Employment Scheme, (NYEP)?\u00a0 Number one, the Greater Accra regional minister\u2019s residence has become a place for the payment of those who work for the scheme.<\/p>\n The workers line up and millions of cedis stashed in \u2018Ghana must go\u2019 bags are openly displayed and paid to these poor young people, many of whom would have travelled long distances to collect those stipends, out of which an NDC imposed \u2018Party Security and National Trust (PSNT)\u2019 are deducted to ensure the future of the party and not the contributors.<\/p>\n Still on the NYEP, over GH\u00a2228 million has been paid to 79 people who do not work for the scheme but constantly collect their salaries and \u2018make sales\u2019 to the NDC bosses who \u2018employed\u2019 them.<\/p>\n You see, these amounts being pillaged by your men can further employ more of the youth to reduce unemployment in this country, but the NDC prefers stealing them to employing the funds judiciously.<\/p>\n These criminals masquerading as men and women of integrity of our times; it is a pity. Anas has genuine cause to feel frustrated in a country where corruption has been glorified and raised to a virtue.<\/p>\n Men and women of straw just yesterday, can today afford to throw cash around as if they mint monies in their homes.<\/p>\n Now Egya Atta, your party which promised austerity and humility in governance is today exhibiting the most stinking acts of profligacy in the face of untold hardships confronting this country.<\/p>\n Where did you get the US20 million which is going into the construction of the NDC party headquarters in a conflicting location in Accra, by a Chinese Company? I now can understand your government\u2019s obsession for everything Chinese, from huge loans through to Chinese bribes from contracts awarded.<\/p>\n Egya Atta, the contradictions inherent in the source of funding and even the location of the project is very pungent for a government led by a so-called humble man.<\/p>\n Finally, Egya Atta, are you aware of the current report of the Transparency International on Ghana?<\/p>\n It stinks; Ghana\u2019s position on the international corruption index is rising under your watch.
