{"id":9361,"date":"2011-12-09T07:45:41","date_gmt":"2011-12-09T07:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/12\/kenya-un-chief-welcomes-move-to-join-au-somalia-force\/"},"modified":"2011-12-09T07:45:41","modified_gmt":"2011-12-09T07:45:41","slug":"kenya-un-chief-welcomes-move-to-join-au-somalia-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/12\/09\/kenya-un-chief-welcomes-move-to-join-au-somalia-force\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya: UN Chief Welcomes Move to Join AU Somalia Force"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rnw.nl\/africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/rnw180.png\" alt=\"Radio Netherlands Worldwide (Hilversum)\" title=\"Visit Radio Netherlands Worldwide (Hilversum)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>8 December 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday praised Kenya&#8217;s move to join the African Union force battling Al Qaeda-inspired insurgents in southern Somalia, a spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He welcomed the endorsement by the parliament yesterday of Kenya&#8217;s decision to join the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM),&#8221; a UN spokesman said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The statement was issued after Ban met Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula in Nairobi.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He also stressed the need for the mission to reach its full mandated capacity,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The AU force &#8211; currently comprised of Ugandan and Burundian troops &#8211; was first deployed in 2007 and counts 9,700 soldiers, short of its full authorised capacity of 12,000.<\/p>\n<p>Nairobi unilaterally sent troops across its border with southern Somalia on October 14 to contain the threat posed by the Islamist Shebab militia, which was blamed for a spate of kidnapping in Kenya.<\/p>\n<p>Kenya now wants to re-hat its operation in Somalia to include the forces it already has on the ground in AMISOM, whose forces are deployed mainly in the capital Mogadishu.<\/p>\n<p>The Shebab, who have been attempting to topple Somalia&#8217;s Western-backed Transitional Federal Government for five years, also face a push by Ethiopian troops coming from the west.<\/p>\n<p><em>ANP\/AFP<\/em><\/p>\n<p>AllAfrica &#8211; All the Time<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<fieldset>\n<legend align=\"center\"><strong>More News on allAfrica.com<\/strong><\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 8 December 2011 UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday praised Kenya&#8217;s move to join the African Union force battling Al Qaeda-inspired insurgents in southern Somalia, a spokesman said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9361","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
