{"id":9262,"date":"2011-12-09T02:56:10","date_gmt":"2011-12-09T02:56:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/12\/japan-rebuffs-tepco-bailout-claim\/"},"modified":"2011-12-09T02:56:10","modified_gmt":"2011-12-09T02:56:10","slug":"japan-rebuffs-tepco-bailout-claim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/12\/09\/japan-rebuffs-tepco-bailout-claim\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan rebuffs Tepco bailout claim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><span>9 December 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>02:56 GMT<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/57196000\/jpg\/_57196458_118273553.jpg\" width=\"304\" height=\"171\" alt=\"Residents of Tomioka in white protection suits evacuated to the city of Koriyama \" \/><span>Tens of thousands of people have been displaced by the disaster and whole town are uninhabitable<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s trade minister Yukio Edano has denied reports that troubled nuclear firm Tepco is about to receive a huge government bailout.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Edano said Tepco, which runs the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, had made no requests for public money.<\/p>\n<p>Reports said the government would buy about 1tn yen ($12.9bn; \u00a38.2bn) of Tepco shares next year &#8211; which would in effect nationalise the firm.<\/p>\n<p>Tepco shares plummeted on Thursday, ending the day down more than 11%.<\/p>\n<p>The firm faces massive compensation payments and clean-up costs after March&#8217;s tsunami and earthquake caused three of the Fukushima plant&#8217;s reactors to go into partial meltdown.<\/p>\n<p>The government had already agreed a 900bn yen bailout fund in November to help pay compensation for those affected.<\/p>\n<p>Reports on Thursday in Japanese media said the 1tn yen share purchase was separate from the bailout fund.<\/p>\n<p>The reports quoted unnamed sources saying the government would seek shareholder approval to lift the ceiling on issuance of Tepco shares at a meeting in June.<\/p>\n<p>Some reports put the prospective share purchase figure as high as 3tn yen.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Edano told reporters on Friday: &#8220;As of now no requests have been made [from Tepco], and it is not the case that we are making arrangements in the direction of injecting public funds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are considering with all kinds of possibilities in mind.&#8221;<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 9 December 2011 Last updated at 02:56 GMT Tens of thousands of people have been displaced by the disaster and whole town are uninhabitable Japan&#8217;s trade minister Yukio Edano has denied reports that troubled nuclear firm Tepco is about to receive a huge government bailout.
