She told the newly elected and incumbent lawmakers that, “As the First Session of the 53rd Legislature gets underway in January 2012, I call upon you to demonstrate the same spirit of cooperation that has existed between the Executive and Legislative branches, as we join forces to bring peace and prosperity to our nation and people.”

President Johnson-Sirleaf made the call to the lawmakers recently in a speech delivered at the National Elections Commission (NEC) certification program for winners of the 2011 Presidential and Legislative Elections.

Hear the Liberian leader: “Ladies and gentlemen of the Legislature, let me say this; our people have elected us with the expectation that we will work together and put their interests first.”

President Johnson-Sirleaf stated that it is the expectation of those who elected her and the incoming lawmakers that these two branches of the Liberian government will work together to improve the lives and livelihoods of Liberians.

“We must pledge to work together to craft the necessary legislation that will put more and more of our people to work; particularly our disadvantaged youths,” she pleaded with the lawmakers.

The chief executive stressed that the lawmakers should work along with her as head of the Executive Branch of the Liberian government in a way that will engender peace, reconciliation and renewal.

Said the President: “We must and will work collaboratively to create jobs and training, build basic infrastructure, bring more electricity and clean water to more of our people.”

She pointed out that the collaborative work between the Legislative and Executive Branches should also seek to create the environment for Liberian businesses, maintain and open and accountable Liberian society and fight corruption more effectively.”

“We cannot retreat, not with so many children to educate, so many young people in need of technical and vocational training and jobs, and an economy that must be strengthened through new investment and proper management of our natural resources.” President Johnson-Sirleaf said.

“In our second term, we will continue to work to put the pieces together; to ensure sustainability in peace, growth and development not only in Liberia, but in our sub-region, because what affects one of our neighbors impacts the others.” President Johnson-Sirleaf further said.

She added: “We all need to grow our economy; to be able to provide jobs; meet people’s basic needs and reduce the level of poverty which leads to conflict.”

AllAfrica –
