Johannesburg – New Special Investigating Unit (SIU) boss Willem Heath<\/a> has accused former president Thabo Mbeki<\/a> of \u201cinitiating\u201d rape and corruption charges against President Jacob Zuma<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a no-holds-barred interview with City Press, Heath said:<\/p>\n

\u00bb Schabir Shaik<\/a> and Tony Yengeni<\/a> were \u201csacrificed\u201d in the arms deal investigation;<\/p>\n

\u00bb Mbeki \u201cdictated\u201d to the National Prosecuting Authority in Zuma\u2019s rape trial and<\/p>\n

\u00bb Judge Hilary Squires\u2019 judgment in the Shaik corruption trial was flawed as there wasn\u2019t sufficient evidence to convict Shaik.<\/p>\n

Zuma was acquitted of rape in 2006.<\/p>\n

The president controversially appointed Heath to replace Willie Hofmeyr<\/a> as head of the SIU last week. Hofmeyr also heads the Asset Forfeiture Unit.<\/p>\n

Former president Nelson Mandela<\/a> appointed Heath to establish the SIU in 1996.<\/p>\n

In 2001, Heath resigned as SIU boss after the Constitutional Court found a sitting judge could not head a long-term investigating unit.<\/p>\n

Mbeki refused to grant Heath an early retirement and he had to resign as a judge \u2013 a decision that, according to Heath, left him a \u201cpauper\u201d.<\/p>\n

He defended helping Zuma in having corruption charges against him dropped and said there were many more ANC leaders who were paid by \u201cthose with money\u201d.<\/p>\n

Heath also admitted making payments on behalf of slain mining boss Brett Kebble that some could interpret as \u201cbribes\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to Mbeki\u2019s spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga on Saturday, Mbeki was abroad and will return soon.<\/p>\n

Ratshitanga said: \u201cHis (Mbeki\u2019s) office will study the article and quotations that will be attributed to Advocate Heath and determine whether, how and when to respond.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
