Johannesburg – A spokesperson for the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality says officials are considering a ban on fishing close to recreational beaches in Port Elizabeth.<\/p>\n

Spokesperson Kupido Baron said that the suggestion was being considered after it became apparent that chumming – a custom of throwing cut fish in the sea to catch sharks – was taking place close to surfing, paddling and swimming areas.<\/p>\n

The municipality beach office has recommended a ban on angling from Kings Beach (Southern) Harbour Wall, to Flat Rock (Beacon).<\/p>\n

Areas of 500m within lifeguard demarcated bathing areas would be affected.<\/p>\n

These included Bluewater Bay, St Georges Strand, Brighton Beach and Wells Estate.<\/p>\n

Wild Side beaches such as Maitlands, Blue Horizon Bay and Van Stadens River Mouth are also included.<\/p>\n

The ban was considered after members of the public raised concerns that chumming close to recreation areas could be dangerous.<\/p>\n

The municipality said a public participation process would be started soon.<\/p>\n

Baron said the measures would not mean a complete ban.<\/p>\n

Angling would still be allowed from Beacon down towards Willows, Schoenmakerskop and locations outside bathing areas.<\/p>\n

If the bylaws are enacted, transgressors could face a maximum fine of R10 000 and the areas under consideration would be monitored by closed circuit television.<\/p>\n
