{"id":5396,"date":"2011-12-04T00:10:09","date_gmt":"2011-12-04T00:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/12\/protests-at-climate-change-summit\/"},"modified":"2011-12-04T00:10:09","modified_gmt":"2011-12-04T00:10:09","slug":"protests-at-climate-change-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/12\/04\/protests-at-climate-change-summit\/","title":{"rendered":"Protests at climate change summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><span>4 December 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>00:10 GMT<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/media\/images\/53112000\/jpg\/_53112553_d9585d45-a435-41cd-8463-d91d917b7977.jpg\" alt=\"Richard Black\" \/><span>By Richard Black<\/span> <span>Environment correspondent, BBC News<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/57111000\/jpg\/_57111569_protestreuters.jpg\" width=\"464\" height=\"261\" alt=\"Climate change protesters march in Durban, 3 December 2011\" \/><span>Protesters rallied in Durban on Saturday<\/span><\/div>\n<p>Thousands of demonstrators have marched through the South African city of Durban demanding faster action on climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The annual UN climate summit is being held at the city&#8217;s convention centre.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters were particularly angered by the stance of rich countries such as the US and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>In London. former UK Deputy Prime Minister Lord Prescott said the approach of these nations was &#8220;appalling&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway through this summit, some progress has been made, but a few countries including the US, Canada and Saudi Arabia are holding out on important issues such as the future of the Kyoto Protocol.<\/p>\n<p>Fourteen years ago, Lord Prescott played a leading role in the UN summit in Kyoto that brought the protocol into existence.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the BBC, he was scathing about nations trying to delay progress now.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-16021217#story_continues_2\">Continue reading the main story<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Let&#8217;s have a reassessment of it by 2015.&#8221; he said. &#8220;But if you don&#8217;t finish in time for the ending of Kyoto Two, which is next year, 2012, then, you know, it will actually wither on the vine and that&#8217;s what Canada and America wants &#8211; and one or two other rich countries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a conspiracy against the poor. It&#8217;s appalling.
