Renowned military sports administrator, General Emmanuel Okaro(rtd) has said that having ex-players as coaches has not done much in helping Nigerian football instead they have contributed woefully to the down fall of the country\u2019s football.<\/p>\n

General Okaro, who was reacting to the string of poor results posted by the U-23 team at the on-going CAF African U-23 Championship in Morocco, said Austin Eguavoen should have saved Nigeria from embarrassment.<\/p>\n

He stressed that despite the support given the coach by the NFF to excel in the competition, Eguavoen showed that he is not competent on the job and therefore, nobody should blame the NFF.<\/p>\n

\u201cEx-internationals have really failed Nigerian football, it is crystal-clear that they do not have what it takes to handle the country\u2019s national teams. Eguavoen could not harness local players but rather depended on foreign-based players to execute his plans .<\/p>\n

In this regard, the NFF should not be blamed for the ouster because they (NFF) provided him everything he needed for the competition\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added that \u201cEguavoen knew that it was a mini-tournament and the competition is not on FIFA\u2019S calender, yet his focus was on the foreign players, thinking the clubs will release them. So he should not blame the clubs or anybody but himself. He could have concentrated on the players at home. His case is just similar to the issue of Samson Siasia who did not know that at 2-1, Nigeria would have qualified for the Nations Cup. So why then is he a coach? People should not blame the NFF for anything, because they made plans for the team to excel but it is glaring that Eguavoen was not capable.<\/p>\n

He however advised that the appointment of coaches to the national teams should not be on ex-international or ex-players but people who have the experience on the job.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not believe in having ex-internationals as our national team coaches because they have not lived up to expectation. There are other coaches in this country who were not ex-internationals yet they did well as coaches. For instance, Shaibu Amodu, John Obuh to measure but a few.<\/p>\n

I think it is high time we stopped this idea of having ex-internationals as coaches in our teams, because they do not have what it takes,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, former Super Falcons coach Paul Hamilton has risen in strong defence of Nigeria\u2019s ex-internationals, insisting that they are a blessing, rather than a curse to Nigerian football, but are only victims of a poor football structure.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I can say is that Nigeria\u2019s football is passing through a phase and I believe there will be good time in the nearest future. That there are no results from them now does not mean they are not good or that they are a curse. They are not a curse but a blessing to Nigeria\u2019s football,\u201d Hamilton stressed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
