He said even though volumes of personal letters had reduced considerably, parcels sent and received had increased as a result of electronic commerce.

Mr Abdul-Rafiu was speaking at a Flag Raising Ceremony in Accra organised by the Ghana Post (GP) in collaboration with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a specialized agency of the United Nations to commemorate World Post Day.

It was on the theme: “The Post, An Invaluable Public Service World Wide.”

Mr Abdul-Rafiu said the GP had reintroduced domestic money transfer as a means of transferring money to friends, loved ones and relatives.

He called for the formulation of effective and efficient policies and programmes aimed at enhancing postal service delivery in a viable and competitive communication sub-sector.

Mr Edouard Dayan, Director-General of UPU, in a statement read on his behalf, underscored the importance of postal financial institutions, stressing that without the banking facilities offered by those institutions, there was no way people without banking facilities or with low incomes could have had access to savings and loans products through traditional financial institutions.

World Post Day is set aside on the ninth day of October each year to raise awareness on the role of postal services in the socio-economic development of the country.
