After Arsenal legend Thierry Henry had returned to face his former club, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger claimed the French forward still has what it takes to play at the top level.

The 33-year-old scored 226 goals in 369 games for Arsenal and is now plying his trade for MLS side New York Red Bulls, who lifted the Emirates Cup after a 1-1 draw with the Gunners on Sunday.

“They say great clubs never die and it looks like great players never die. Thierry has shown us today that he is still top quality with his feet and with his head,” Wenger told reporters after the game.

“With his head, I knew he is still top quality, but with his feet I wasn’t sure. He still has good physical potential and has prepared exceptionally well for this game. I am very happy to have seen him today and he played a good game.”

Wenger revealed that the former Gunners ace was planning on pulling on the red and white shirt again for the final few minutes of the clash, but had been told he wasn’t allowed to.

“The surprise was that we wanted to him to play in the last five minutes for us. He was desperate to do it, but the referees stubbornly turned it down,”he added.

“I went in to see the referee at half time to ask him to allow him to play for us but they told us that the rules are absolutely, adamantly against it because one given player cannot play for two teams in the same game. That was the surprise! It would have been before he supplied the pass that led to the equaliser.”
