Sokoto \u2013 The Federal Government weekend said it has concluded plans to rehabilitate dams nationwide as part of efforts to boost agriculture and water resources.<\/p>\n

Minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sera Ochekpe, who disclosed this during a visit to Governor Aliyu Wamakko in Sokoto, said that maintenance of the dams would be prioritised.<\/p>\n

Ochekpe said: \u201cFederal Government is committed to ensuring safety of lives and property of every citizen.\u00a0 The state government should detail some engineers to work with staff of the contractors handling the repair of Goronyo Dam to ensure proper supervision and monitoring.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are here to visit Goronyo dam based on the directive of President Goodluck Jonathan.<\/p>\n

The President is really concerned about the problem. The work on the dam will commence with repairs of the emergency spill way of the dam which broke last year and caused the devastating flood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ochekpe said work was delayed because Federal Government had to commission a study to find all it needed to do the dam.<\/p>\n

She added: \u2018\u2019We want to make sure that all the observed defects in the entire dam are rectified.\u201d<\/p>\n

The minister assured that the irrigation aspects of the dam would be completed.<\/p>\n

Responding, Wamakko commended Jonathan for showing concern on the matter and other issues concerning the state.<\/p>\n

The Governor called for\u00a0 routine maintenance of\u00a0 dams in the country to prevent menace of flood occasioned by their collapse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
