Mr Frank Adjei-Badu, President of the Pharmacy Technologists Association of Ghana (PTAG), on Friday said all Pharmacy Shops must have a Pharmacist or a Pharmacist Technologist to help check the sale of fake drugs.<\/p>\n

He said this when speaking at the 1st Annual General Conference of PTAG at Fijai near Takoradi.<\/p>\n

The conference was under the theme: \u201cExpanding the role of the Pharmacy Technologist in the current trend of Pharmaceutical Care Delivery\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mr Adjei-Badu said the incidence of the sale of dangerous and fake drugs would go down when there is a Pharmacist or a Pharmacy Technologist at every Pharmacy Shop.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrained persons like Pharmacy Technologists would be able to identify dangerous substances and prevent them from finding their way to the shelves\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Adjei-Badu appealed to the drafters of the new Pharmacy Bill to ensure that the roles of Pharmacy Technologists are well expanded and clarified.<\/p>\n

Mrs Martha Gyansa Lutterott, Chief Pharmacist and the Director of the Pharmaceutical Services of the Ministry of Health, said one of the objectives of the ministry is to improve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4, 5, and 6.<\/p>\n

She said to achieve this requires the availability of effective, safe, quality, cost-effective medicines and their rational use.<\/p>\n

In this regard, Mrs Lutterott said it is policy of the Ministry of Health to reduce infant and maternal mortality and other diseases such as HIV\/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis while working hard to encourage Ghanaians to lead healthy lifestyles.<\/p>\n

Mrs Lutterott said essential medicines play an important role in the global reduction of mortality and morbidity.<\/p>\n

She advised Pharmacy Technologists to register with the Pharmacy Council which is the sole body regulating pharmaceutical practice in the country.<\/p>\n
