Liverpool<\/a> have confirmed that midfielder Steven Gerrard<\/a> will miss his club\u2019s start to the season as he recovers from an infection picked up this week.<\/p>\n

The infection relates to a long-standing groin injury and the midfielder is currently being treated with antibiotics in hospital<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n


The club has issued the following statement, on their official website regarding Gerrard’s condition: “Steven Gerrard today began a course of antibiotic treatment for an infection related to an ongoing groin problem.<\/p>\n

“He is expected to remain in hospital for several days while the precautionary procedure is completed.<\/p>\n

“The player will then return to Melwood to continue his rehabilitation programme and is expected to be available for selection in September.”<\/p>\n

The Reds captain missed a large amount of last season due to problems with his groin and his campaign ended prematurely in March as he underwent surgery.<\/p>\n

He is now expected to miss Premier League games against Sunderland, Arsenal and Bolton for Liverpool whilst he will also now be a doubt for England’s Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales which take place at the beginning of the month.
