The Scorpions though still maintained their position on the continental stage.

Paul Put’s charges were ranked 102 and 27th in the world and African stages respectively for last month but the latest release on yesterday saw the 2012 African Cup of Nations hopefuls move up two places to 100 on the global stage but remained 27th on the continent.

The leap back into the top 100 is attributed to the Scorpions’ 1-0 friendly international win over the next edition of the African Cup of nation’s co-hosts Gabon in Franceville secured by a Njogu Demba-Nyren penalty last month. Ranked 65th for the month of June 2009, it still remained the country’s highest ever placing since the rankings started in 1993.

The Scorpions are set to host Democratic Republic of Congo in a friendly international on Wednesday 10th August 2011 at the Independence Stadium in Bakau. the team will then face Namibia in Windhoek for a crucial AFCON qualifier on the 3rd of September before entertaining section leaders Burkina Faso in a possible group decider in Banjul a month later in October.

Burkina remained the fourth best side in Africa and it is ranked 37th in the world in the same release announced yesterday while the group’s basement side is the 43rd best side out of 52 countries in Africa and is ranked 153rd on the global stage.

Uruguay’s Copa America triumph over Paraguay has seen the country jump to fifth in the FIFA world rankings, their highest ever position. Uruguay overcame Paraguay 3-0 in the final of the CONMEBOL competition in Buenos Aires earlier this month, becoming South American continental champions for a record 15th time. Their performance saw them jump 13 places up the rankings, while Paraguay’s efforts did not go unrewarded, the losing finalists moving up six places to 26th.

Surprise semi-finalists Peru leapt 24 places to 25th, while Venezula, who also reached the last four, moved up 29 places to 40th. Mexico had entered the top 10 with victory in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in June, but their exit from the Copa America without winning a point saw them slip 11 places to 20th.

Brazil survived their surprise quarter-final exit from the Copa, moving up one place to fourth. They remain behind the top three of world and European champions Spain, World Cup runners-up the Netherlands and beaten World Cup semi-finalists Germany, who are unchanged. Further down the rankings, England drop to sixth, ahead of Portugal in seventh and Italy in eighth. Croatia, followed by Argentina, round out the top 10.

The Caribbean nations of the Dominican Republic (132nd, up 40), the US Virgin Islands (149th, up 44), the Bahamas (152nd, up 45) and Aruba (168th, up 32) have all made an impression on the ranking after making a successful start to their qualifying campaigns for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica – All the Time

Read More:
Nation Back in Top FIFA 100

The Daily Observer (Banjul) Baboucarr Camara 28 July 2011 The Gambia has moved back into the top 100 of the FIFA Coca-Cola world rankings in the latest release by world football governing body on Wednesday.
