The pledge came after the locals who took turns to speak at the meeting highlighted the need for the extension of water and electricity supplies to the locality, especially areas that lack these vital amenities.

The Gambian leader told them that his government has in fact secured the funds for these amenities that are part of two projects. He said: “You are raising concern over water and electricity supply, but all these are part of two projects that we have secured funds for to address them. What I want to assure you is that if I stand here by July 2012 in a meeting of this nature you will not request two development needs – electricity and water from here [in Lamin] up to Bafuloto [in the same locality].”

President Jammeh reminded the locals that his meeting in Lamin was not the first of its kind, recalling that during one of the meetings there, they spoke on the need to reconstruct the Lamin-Mandinaring road network. He expressed with delight that the request was met by his government. “I can assure you that whatever I promise you, by the grace of the Almighty Allah you will get it. Then in our meetings here, you didn’t complain of water and electricity, but the road linking Lamin and Mandinaring,” he added.

Women’s efforts in development

President Jammeh hailed the women of the country for their unceasing commitment to poverty eradication and national development.He observed that women are working all year round, acknowledging further that they have been very hardworking since the dawn of 1994.

“I befriend anyone who is hardworking, honest and committed to national development. This is why women are my friends because they have been working hard since 1994. The Gambian women from Kartong to Koina have been working hard both during rainy season and dry season,” he stated. He then assured the women that the “sky is the limit” as regards their empowerment and development under his leadership in view of their resolute stance in national development. President Jammeh underscored that if the women have not been utilising the many projects executed by his government, it would have been another sad story.

Banjulinding-Lamin women applauded

The Gambian leader specifically commended the Lamin-Banjulinding women for their exemplary strides in agriculture, notably horticulture. He said they need not show him anything as regards their efforts in agriculture, as he sees their mark every time he passes by. “It was in 1995 that we put up this facility in Banjulinding. The reason being is that since 1995 I have been saying that let’s go back to the land for national pride and dignity to grow what we eat and eat what we grow. It is the women that are heeding to this call and this is why we put this for women in Banjulinding,” he added.

Call for change of mindset amongst youths

The Gambian leader, like in previous meetings deplored the ‘lackadaisical’ attitude of Gambian youths towards their self-reliance as well as national development, stressing the need for a change of mindset in this regard. The president admitted that the youths of the country have been very supportive of his leadership since 1994, while asserting that his government has also fulfilled its own side of the bargain by providing multiples of opportunities for the empowerment and development of the young people. However, he asked whether the youths are exploiting and making use of these vast opportunities created and placed at their disposal by his government; a question he emphatically answered “no”.

President Jammeh counted scores of projects executed by his government meant to enable the citizens including youths to help themselves for their development and the reduction of poverty, such as the multi-million dollar fisheries projects in Tanji and Gunjur, amongst others. However, he decried as unfortunate the fact that these giant projects are only being exploited by mostly foreigners, stating that the only Gambians that utilise them are women and young girls.”I feel touched when I see those Gambian women and young girls trying to walk in the water to get the fish on to the shores from the sea,” the Gambian leader told the gathering.

He reiterated that today the markets are dominated by foreigners who are engaged in all sorts of trade including tailoring, fishing, consumer shop trading, charcoal, and firewood. He further stated that even edible fruits in Gambian forests are being harvested and sold to the citizens, whilst the youths continue to sit idly by, watching, brewing attaya and yet complain that it is hard to make ends meet in the country.

Babylon syndrome

President Jammeh also used the Lamin meeting to deplore the Babylon syndrome that continues to pervades the minds of Gambian youths, while urging them to stay in the country, work hard by exploiting the natural resources and facilities with a view to earn a comfortable and decent living. He maintained that he is not asking the youths not to travel, but pointed out that the kind of work undertaken by the youths in Europe could make them become millionaires in The Gambia if they apply the same effort.

He explained that this is due to the fact that the youths would work under a very friendly environment as opposed to the harsh conditions in Europe. Speaking earlier, the minister of the Interior, Ousman Sonko acknowledged Kombo North’s support to the ruling party. The Interior minister, who doubles as one of the APRC liaison officers of WCR, expressed optimism that the region will emerge as first amongst other regions in the country in terms of percentage of votes polled for the ruling party.

He also urged the old militants to be accommodative and open to newcomers, underscoring that a party survives with membership. Minister Sonko, while stressing the need for the locals to join hands with the authorities in combating illicit drugs in the region, equally urged the youths to distance themselves from what he described as a destructive menace. He also warned against disorder, urging the people to be vigilant about those bent on inciting instability through technological means, such as [sinister] mobile text messages. The minister of Forestry and the Environment, Jatto Sillah, the APRC national mobiliser and mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, Yankuba Colley all thanked the people of Kombo North for their allegiance to the ruling party, urging them to keep the momentum.

Locals’ account

Various local speakers who took turns to address the meeting all heaped praises on the Gambian leader for the massive infrastructural developments in the country, while pledging Kombo North’s commitment to replicate their previous successes by giving a very high percentage of votes to the ruling party in the forthcoming presidential election.

They also stated their needs to the president, top of which was the need for the extension of both electricity and water supply to areas in the locality that lack these amenities.

Speaking earlier, John P Bojang, the chairman of the National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) and first minister of Trade,Industry& Employment in the AFPRC government, refreshed the minds of the people, recalling that when the Gambian leader took the reins of power in 1994, many questions were raised, ranging from his age to his academic ability, and the country’s lack of resources. He expressed delight that the president has proven the sceptics wrong with his miraculous developments.

Other speakers at the meeting included Binta Sabally; Honourable Adama Cham, NAM for Kombo North; and Paramount Chief Demba Sanyang, who all assured President Jammeh of a landslide victory in the region.

Defection

Meanwhile during the meeting, at least over 200 people from the opposition defected from the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the National Reconciliation Party (NRP). They were led by Ismaila Sanneh, who contested against Adama Cham in the 2007 National Assembly Elections under UDP ticket, and Yafatou Sowe of NRP.

Sanneh and Sowe who spoke at the occasion described their days in the opposition as something destined by God, stating that the same God enabled them to switch allegiance to the APRC. They explained that their defection was borne out of the fact that they are convinced of the developments undertaken by the Jammeh administration.

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica – All the Time

See more here:
President Jammeh Pledges to Solve Water, Electricity Problems in Lamin By 2012

The Daily Observer (Banjul) Hatab Fadera and Musa Ndow On Tour 28 July 2011 As part of his government’s relentless and continuous drive to expand the provision of basic social amenities to the doorsteps of Gambians, the president of the Republic has pledged to end the water and electricity problems of the locals in some parts of Lamin down towards Bafuloto in the West Coast Region (WCR).
