The issue of pre-marital sex has become dominant in Ghana and those who are involved in it seem to ignore the troubles which it brings along. ‘Ghana should go colo’, as the headline says, is that we should go back to the way our parents used to live during their time and adopt it once again.

From what my granny always tells me, I can say for a fact that in the olden days, things were much better than it is now, in terms of how one carries him or her self before getting married. This issue of sex before marriage has been one of the major problems that lead to early divorce cases in Ghana.

The fact that a lady should be a virgin before marriage was seriously looked into and for that matter many ladies by then always make sure they keep themselves until they get married. For instance, among the Krobos of Ghana, ‘dipo’ rites are performed to encourage young ladies to uphold virtuous behavior and aspire towards being virgins till they get married. But today, the youth indulge in early sexual activities.

EFFECTS OF PREMARITAL SEX

Boys are not greatly affected, as are girls, when problems of promiscuous lifestyles become evident. When a girl is involved in sexual intercourse and gets pregnant, abortion is the next thing that follows. In the process she can either lose her life or her womb.

Suppose the girl decides to deliver the baby, her schooling is at stake, which usually happens and most of the girls become school drop outs. In case this girl does not come from an affluent home and, therefore, do not get the help she is supposed to get during and after her pregnancy, the child comes to the world to suffer. This adds to the rate of child trafficking and child labor in the country.

The ordeal that these girls go through shatters their dreams. Most of these girls find it very difficult to get married or start new lives. Most often, the boys who impregnate these girls are able to finish their education and get their degrees, but do not marry these girls whose future they have destroyed. This can make the girls commit suicide or suffer psychologically.

BIBLICAL RESPONSE TO PREMARITAL SEX

The Holy Bible does not agree to the practice of pre-marital sex. As a Christian, we should always educate the people around us to know and love God better. The youth of today need to be taught to abstain from sexual intercourse and remain pure virgins before marriage.

According to 1Corinthians 6:18-19, the Bible says “Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own”.

Many people get affected with many sicknesses before they go into marriage because of prior immoral affairs. Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), Gonorrhea and Infertility, just to mention a few are all dominant problems in the country, as a result of sexual intercourse. The Bible is right when it says sexual immorality is a sin against one’s own body.

To continue, 1 Corinthians 7:2 also says that “Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. From this scripture, one should, therefore, consider that sex is for married people and without marriage one does not have the license to indulge in sexual intercourse.

To this end, the Holy Bible also talked about the kind of people who will not make it to heaven and for that reason those who will be in hell, and sexual immorality is included. This can be found in Revelation 21:8 which says “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexual immoral, sorcerers, Idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death’.

CONCLUSION

This act of premarital sex has been a great menace to Ghanaians and the country at large, and must be well looked into to eradicate the challenges it brings along. Ghanaian youth should go back and seek the way our parents used to live and adopt their way of life.

I hereby plead with parents, teachers, pastors, guardians and all those who are in the field of advising, should not relent but go on to advice the youth of today, so that the problems associated with premarital sex will be a thing of the past.

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica – All the Time

Taken from:
Ghana: Ghanaians Should Go ‘Colo’

Janet Norteye 28 July 2011 opinion It would not interest you to see such a topic, but at the end you will buy into what I am about to say.
