The two men are no more but they will be remembered by their good deeds. Indeed their legacies will live on for many generations to come.

Mr. Larry Bimi will be remembered for instituting the annual constitutional week by NCCE with the help of the civil society, while Alhaji Issifu is remembered for instituting measures for better and improved trade unionism in Ghana.

The respect and reverence accorded our late role models is not peculiar to Muslims only but to all Ghanaians – Christians and traditionalists. Indeed the entire Ghanaian society do accord respect to our ancestors to the extent that some do go on pilgrimage or annual tours to cemeteries where they are buried to pray for their souls.

Indeed, the current Mayor of Accra so loved his ancestors and gave respect to the departed souls that he recently instituted a day annually to clear the cemeteries in the Greater Accra region of weeds. Because he is down to earth, Dr. Vanderpuye personally took part in the clean up exercises and was shown on television weeding and conveying the rubbish himself.

He stated that the Awudome cemetery and other cemeteries in Accra are the final resting places of all including himself, therefore cemeteries deserve to be kept clean.

Indeed Dr. Vanderpuye came into office as mayor with a lot of vigor by going ahead to declare Accra a Millennium City, setting in motion to keep not only our cemeteries clean but our neighborhoods as well.

The question to pose is, is Dr. Vanderpuye and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) really living up their words? Don’t we have garbage heaped in most vantage points in suburbs of Accra uncollected? Do we have land fill sites to dump our garbage in Accra? What effort are we making to get a landfill site?

The increase of large tonnage of garbage in Accra requires that Dr. Oko Vanderpuye and his team in the AMA must take a stand. The AMA will be better off seeking advice from Mr. Ajiri Blankson and do well to go for experts to acquire equipments to clear the heaps of garbage in the suburbs and the centre of Accra.

The AMA under Dr. Vanderpuye must tell the nation what it is doing to turn our large tonnage of garbage into energy together with the Ministry of Environment Science and Technology to electrify our cities as promised.

Apart from garbage, a few things that sadden the heart of people and can turn off tourists are armed robbery and the perennial flooding and attacks on hawkers by the AMA task force.

How do you want to attract tourists to a city in which banks are attacked by motor ridding robbers who snatch bags from women and succeed in robbing banks at the full glare of the public? The police under Madam Rose Bio Atinga are doing their best by arresting some of the robbers. But more needs to be done to nip this canker in the bud before they give a bad name to the Accra Millennium City.

The perennial flooding which has been claiming lives and properties of people with Kwame Nkrumah Circle which gets inundated with little rainfall is also not good enough.

AMA can do one thing to save the situation by de-silting the drains at places like the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, make sure all buildings in water ways are not allowed and big gutters and underground drains created like the ones in Alajo to take care of floods when it rains.

When Dr. Vanderpuye took over as mayor of Accra from Mr. Stanley Ajiri Blankson, he inherited an initiative to get rid of hawkers in the central business area of Accra.

Because the use of brute force did not work, Mr. Ajiri Blanklson abandoned it and approached the issue in a more liberal manner. Dr. Vanderrpuye is expected to learn from that.

The bye laws prohibit people from engaging in hawking in busy areas of Accra, especially, the Graphic Road and the central business areas to make room for free movement of people and vehicles. AMA should do well to get the bye laws to work.

But, the Rambo-style method being used to drive hawkers away and seize their goods (even if in line with the law) is not the best and sustainable. As said earlier Mr. Ajiri Blankson began with the Rambo-style to chase hawkers around.

They could not sustain it because the ‘abaaye’ was not sustainable. Ajiri Blankson changed that method for a better one before the NPP was voted out of power.

It is not too late for Dr. Vanderpuye to emulate his predecessor. Please stop your task force from chasing hawkers and seizing their wares. They may appear to be helping you but some of your men may be doing things against the traders that might end up giving the AMA a bad name.

Most of these poor traders are school drop outs, unemployed housewives and single fathers and mothers who can not make ends meet without working.

Most of those who were arrested have lost their life time earnings and cannot pay their loans obtained from banks. Therefore Dr Vanderpuye and the AMA must change their style to get things going for all of us and to get the tourists to pour in to this country in their numbers. With regard to your show of respect to the dead you are good, Dr. Vanderpuye.

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica – All the Time

More:
Ghana: Let’s Continue to Show Reverence to Our People Dead Or Alive

Alhaji Alhasan Abdulai 28 July 2011 opinion Even though it is already a public knowledge, it is my heartfelt and painful duty to add my voice to the numerous condolences expressed for the sudden death of Mr. Larry Bimi, head of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE)

["post-469996","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
