English champions Manchester United have defeated the MLS All-Stars 4-0 in their clash in New York on Wednesday night.

A crowd of 26,716 came out to the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey to see the famous Old Trafford club take a Major League Soccer selection which was coached by New York Red Bulls boss Hans Backe.

In a lively affair, the MLS side began brightly with an early warning shot from former captain David Beckham who came close in the seventh minute with a whipped shot from range before Brad Davis forced a save out of Anders Lindegaard.

However, the Red Devils produced a brilliantly worked team goal just prior to the 20-minute mark when Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney exchanged passes on the edge of the area before the England international found an unmarked Anderson in the area and the Brazilian did the rest with a neat right-footed finish.

Beckham lured Lindegaard into a quality save when he found space in the heart of United’s defence in the 21st minute before the Dane again tipped over the top when Davis struck from long range about seven minutes later.

Late in the half, Rooney struck sweetly at MLS keeper Faryd Mondragon but the Colombian veteran was up to the task before United’s Park Ji-sung doubled his side’s advantage just before the break when he cut his way into the box before firing home to make it 2-0.

The 52nd minute saw a wonderful pass from Rooney play in Berbatov who had acres of space to beat off his marker Geoff Cameron before lobbing Tally Hall from inside the box but his attempt bounced back off the crossbar. Fortunately for the Bulgarian, the deflection came straight back to him and he was able to smash home from close range after controlling with his shoulder to make it 3-0.

United got their fourth against an MLS squad boasting 15 internationals when substitute Danny Welbeck produced a superb individual goal with just over 20 minutes left, cutting inside from the left and letting rip from 18 yards with thanks to a deflection from Cameron.

The MLS did have some late chances, particularly from Omar Bravo and Nick LaBrocca, but they could not grab a consolation goal as Sir Alex Ferguson’s men backed up last season’s 5-2 win in Houston.
