The majority of parents believe children should start learning about sex and relationships when they are eight years old, a survey suggests.<\/p>\n

Almost half (49.2%) said lessons on the topic should begin between the ages of eight and 12, while a further three in 10 (30.5%) said they should start when pupils are aged 12 to 15.<\/p>\n

But one in seven parents (13.9%) said that youngsters should begin learning about sex and relationships between the ages of five and eight, while 4.1% said that under-fives should be given classes.<\/p>\n

One in eight (12.1%) said that school sex education lessons will result in more children becoming sexually active at a young age, but more than two-thirds (69.7%) did not think this would be the case.<\/p>\n

The findings are contained in a survey of more than 1,377 parents by the Netmums parenting website.<\/p>\n

The poll reveals the issues parents most want their children to learn about in personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) lessons.<\/p>\n

It comes just days after the Government launched a review of PSHE, looking at the content and quality of the lessons.<\/p>\n

The Netmums survey found that more parents think primary school children should be taught about topics such as environmental issues and religion than think they should be taught about sex.<\/p>\n

Almost half (48.9%) of those questioned said religion should be included in primary PSHE classes, while around two thirds (66.2%) wanted to see the environment covered. Just more than a third (34.4%) wanted to see sex included.<\/p>\n

The most popular topics parents want to see in primary PSHE lessons are bullying, personal safety and friendships.<\/p>\n
