Former Newcastle United<\/a> captain Alan Shearer<\/a> believes his old club must add to the number of strikers in their squad, particularly after the sale of Andy Carroll<\/a>.

Carroll was sold to Liverpool for \u00a335 million in January, and Shearer has said he will be surprised if they do not use his enormous transfer fee to add to their squad.<\/p>\n

He told The Daily Mirror<\/em>: \u201cEveryone was obviously disappointed that Andy \u00adCarroll left. But it was \u00adunderstandable when you look at the money they got for him – \u00a335m is a \u00adhell of a lot of cash.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, you don\u2019t want to lose your top players and Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan were probably Newcastle\u2019s two best players.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would be surprised if they did not go out and spend some more money.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope that they do because they had a decent season on their return to the Premier League.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they can improve again next season \u2013 that is all the fans want.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast season was decent and now the supporters will be looking for Alan Pardew to take them into the top 10.\u201d<\/p>\n

So far, manager Pardew has only signed one striker – Demba Ba on a free transfer from West Ham – while he has also sold last season\u2019s top scorer Kevin Nolan to the Upton Park club.<\/p>\n

Pardew has since said that he is looking for one or two strikers, but that they must be a certain type of striker to fit into the system he wishes to play at St James\u2019 Park.<\/p>\n
