{"id":466917,"date":"2011-07-24T01:26:20","date_gmt":"2011-07-24T01:26:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/07\/24\/senegal-rally-backs-wade-campaign\/"},"modified":"2011-07-24T01:26:20","modified_gmt":"2011-07-24T01:26:20","slug":"senegal-rally-backs-wade-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/07\/24\/senegal-rally-backs-wade-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"Senegal rally backs Wade campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div readability=\"62.3379310345\"><span><span>23 July 2011<\/span> <span>Last updated at<\/span> <span>21:26 ET<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of government supporters have rallied in Senegal&#8217;s capital Dakar to back a third term for President Abdoulaye Wade.<\/p>\n<p>Hours earlier, a smaller opposition demonstration called on Mr Wade not to stand in next year&#8217;s election, saying a third term would be unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>The rallies came exactly a month after violent protests forced Mr Wade to withdraw electoral reform proposals.<\/p>\n<p>The site of the opposition protest was changed at the last minute.<\/p>\n<p>It had been due to take place in Independence Square in central Dakar, which is near the presidential palace, but earlier this week the government banned gatherings in the city&#8217;s main squares and roads.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition June 23 Movement was formed after last month&#8217;s countrywide protests &#8211; the most violent protests of Mr Wade&#8217;s 11-year rule.<\/p>\n<p>They led Mr Wade to drop his plans to reduce the proportion of votes needed to win a presidential election, and avoid a run-off, from more than 50% to 25%.<\/p>\n<p>He had also wanted to create an elected post of vice-president.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Wade&#8217;s critics accused him of planning to use the new post to hand power to his son, already a powerful minister.<\/p>\n<p>Both men have denied the claims.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Wade, a veteran opposition leader, first came to power in democratic polls in 2000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Continued here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/go\/rss\/int\/news\/-\/news\/world-africa-14265416\" title=\"Senegal rally backs Wade campaign\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senegal rally backs Wade campaign<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> 23 July 2011 Last updated at 21:26 ET Hundreds of thousands of government supporters have rallied in Senegal&#8217;s capital Dakar to back a third term for President Abdoulaye Wade.
