The Clarets have confirmed on their official website that they have been unable to agree new deals with both players, who are entering the last year of their current deals, and they have now been given permission to speak to the Trotters.

“Burnley Football Club had hoped to persuade the players to sign extensions to their present deals,” a club statement reads.

“However, with the players expressing their desire to immediately return to the Premier League, and effectively able to leave Turf Moor for free next summer, Burney Football Club regrettably has accepted this offer from Bolton.”

The Clarets also confirmed they will reinvest the money from any potential sale, in a bid to improve the squad that finished eighth in the Championship last season.

“The funds from Eagles and Mears’ expected departures will be used to strengthen the squad, with further transfer developments expected early next week,” the statement continues.

“Burnley Football Club will make no further comment at this time.”

The move would see Eagles and Mears reunited with former Burnley boss Coyle, who featured both players in his Clarets squad as they fought against relegation from the Premier League, before the Scot departed for Bolton.
