Badminton<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Badminton, a lesser known sport in the country, is gradually gaining the attention of residents of Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.<\/p>\n

Thanks to Mr. William Odoi, a banker by profession, Badminton is now being held in high esteem in the Garden City.<\/p>\n

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE SPORTS, Mr. Odoi said he loves the sport and he would do everything possible to make it popular in Kumasi.<\/p>\n

Currently, he said, he has assembled about 20 youth, 12 males and eight females, who are being trained to become professional badminton players.<\/p>\n

A badminton player himself, Mr. Odoi said he has over the last two years been sponsoring and training these youngsters.<\/p>\n

Items such as rackets and shuttle corks as well as transportation and feeding of these kids are being taken care of by Mr. Odoi single-handedly.<\/p>\n

He said his aim is to grow the game in Kumasi and for that matter Ghana as a whole, stressing that the sport is interesting and good for the body.<\/p>\n

Mr. Odoi, who is the immediate past Vice Chairman of the Badminton Association of Ghana, noted that he also wants to get the youth off the streets.<\/p>\n

He disclosed that his biggest challenge so far is where to train the young boys and girls.<\/p>\n

Mr. Odoi noted that a youth center at Atonsu where his kids train is now not connected with electricity and without proper illumination they cannot play badminton.<\/p>\n

According to him, some foreigners who used the facility sometime ago incurred a debt of about GH\u00a29,000 and this has compelled the ECG to disconnect the facility from the national grid.<\/p>\n

Mr. Odoi appealed to the government to intervene to make the ECG reconnect electricity to the facility to enable the kids benefit fully from the national asset.<\/p>\n
