The Director of Morcas Islamic and Arabic Institute, Agege, Lagos, Sheik Habeebullahi Al-Ilory, has said it is wrong and against the dictates of Islam for an individual or group to take up arms against defenceless people or a legitimate government.<\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Ilory spoke with journalists against the backdrop of the Boko Haram uprising in some parts of the North, in Lagos.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said human lives were sacrosanct and should not be taken without justification.<\/span><\/p>\n

The director said, \u201cBoko Haram is not Islamic to the best of my knowledge because anybody who is a good Muslim and knowledgeable in Islamic ethics and Quranic teachings should not kill. He should not be a killer for any circumstance or for any reason, unless somebody wants to kill you or takes up arms against you, then you can defend yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJihad is a defensive thing. The wars that Prophet Mohammed waged during his lifetime were not oppressive wars, but defensive wars. The history is there for those who have interest and want to know. So, jihad does not mean that you should kill. They are misinterpreting it; they are misunderstanding it. The cause of this uprising is not Islamic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Ilory disagreed with the notion that poverty was one of the causes of the problem, saying that the crisis had political motive but came under the guise of religion.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Muslim cleric advised the Federal Government to be proactive and ensure that there was adequate security for the lives and property of the citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSecurity of lives and property should be the topmost agenda of the Federal Government. It is the responsibility of the government to tackle anybody and bring them to book who raises arms against the citizens of this country,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
