{"id":465778,"date":"2011-07-21T20:07:56","date_gmt":"2011-07-21T20:07:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/07\/21\/kenyans-to-sue-uk-for-colonial-abuse\/"},"modified":"2011-07-21T20:07:56","modified_gmt":"2011-07-21T20:07:56","slug":"kenyans-to-sue-uk-for-colonial-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/07\/21\/kenyans-to-sue-uk-for-colonial-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenyans to sue UK for colonial abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"52.5641025641\">\n<div readability=\"41.3008763389\"><span><\/span> <span><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" data-count=\"horizontal\" data-via=\"vanguardngrnews\" data-related=\"oluboss\">Tweet<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<div readability=\"52\">\n<p>FOUR elderly Kenyans\u00a0 have been told they can sue the Foreign Office for their alleged torture by British colonial authorities 50 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The High Court said the group could seek damages over their treatment during the 1950s and 60s.<br \/>Mr Justice McCombe said the claimants had an \u201carguable case\u201d and it would be \u201cdishonourable\u201d to block the action.<br \/>Ministers say the UK government is not responsible for the actions of the colonial administration.<\/p>\n<p>The decision means that the government will have to defend accusations of torture, murder, sexual assault and other alleged abuses at a full damages trial in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The four Kenyans, Ndiku Mutwiwa Mutua, Paulo Muoka Nzili, Wambugu Wa Nyingi and Jane Muthoni Mara, all in their 70s and 80s, say ministers in London approved systematic abuse in special camps. A fifth claimant has died since the action began.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Comments are moderated.
