THERE was a sigh of relief in the local boxing fraternity at the weekend after AIBA vice president Abdallah Bessalem proposed a roadmap aimed at ending a long standing leadership feud.<\/p>\n

Bessalem not only called for a new constitution that is compliant with AIBA, but also fresh Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation elections. To Bessalem, this is the best way out of the mess that Uganda’s once most successful sport is currently in.<\/p>\n

For two years two factions have traded boardroom punches, a battle that in the process robbed innocent boxers priceless exposure. As the battles raged, countries and regional boxing bodies also distanced themselves for fear of contracting the Ugandan plague.<\/p>\n

The relief was therefore understandable when Bessalem called a fresh start. People are tired of squabbles and now want real ring action. The Education and Sports ministry, Uganda Olympic Committee, clubs and one of the warring factions all embraced Bessalem’s proposals.<\/p>\n

I happen to have a chat with the proprietor of one of Uganda’s biggest clubs Sam Lukanga. Lukanga like most clubs also believes that there can’t be a better thing than a new beginning.<\/p>\n

To him, what matters most now, is a properly organized election where the winner should be acknowledged by everyone. I am sure the news also comes as a big relief to army side UPDF that is currently in Brazil for the world military games. UPDF had pulled out of local activities because of what it described as poor organisation<\/p>\n

The Godfrey Nyakana executive is however against Bessalem’s roadmap. They insist that they are the legitimate leaders of the sport. What this stand however means, is that daggers will continue to be drawn because the other party will also not rest for as long as Nyakana claims to be in charge.<\/p>\n

Such chaos will ultimately result in an AIBA suspension of Uganda. Surely, that’s not a direction to take for anyone who genuinely loves the Sweet Science. It is time those who are still resisting considered the greater good.<\/p>\n

The fact that even the education and sports ministry, which helped Nyakana secure UABF’s presidency, has embraced Bessalem’s proposal, should be proof that there can’t be a better conclusion to the current mess than the AIBA envoy’s proposals.<\/p>\n

That Bessalem has also clearly stated that none of the warring groups is recognized by the world body, should be more proof that those resisting change are fighting a lost cause<\/p>\n

It’s time to do away with boardroom squabbles and concentrate on boxing.<\/p>\n
