Vice President John Mahama<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

VICE PRESIDENT John Mahama has expressed concern about the grim money grabbing trend among the youth popularly known as \u2018sakawa.\u2019<\/p>\n

He has therefore called on the good people of Ghana especially the churches to help government curb the menace.<\/p>\n

Sakawa usually involves internet fraud, blood or ritual murders and other strange behavior following spooky consultations with witchdoctors and herbalists.<\/p>\n

The Vice President condemned the practice saying it was fast becoming a threat to the moral fiber of the present generation.<\/p>\n

He added that it had started uprooting the honest foundation upon which the Ghanaian society was built.<\/p>\n

Vice President Mahama made the appeal in a speech read on his behalf by Deputy Minister of Local Government, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah at the 25th<\/sup> anniversary celebration of the West Volta Presbytery of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana in Accra on Saturday.<\/p>\n

He applauded the E.P. Church for building health centers and schools in the country adding that in line with the Better Ghana Agenda, government would continue to liaise with churches for the common good of the nation. He further stated that the government had identified human resource as the key to development.<\/p>\n

In his goodwill message to the presbyters, Rt. Rev. Francis Amenu, Moderator of the General Assembly, urged them to ensure that their services lead to the enhancement of human dignity.<\/p>\n

He urged them be dedicated and take bold decisive steps to help ensure the growth and sustainability of the various institutions under their care.<\/p>\n

The E.P. Church he stated would need groups and unions to help build structures to ensure the economic viability of the church. Reverend Amenu therefore called for more investments to create avenues for the development and care of children, the youth, adults, physically challenged and the aged.<\/p>\n

The Chairman of the occasion, Dumega Raymond Okudzeto urged the church to continue the good work which it started 150 years ago.<\/p>\n

He noted that despite all the virtues that the church had brought, social vices continue to plague society with the youth becoming the worst victims.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe as leaders are duty bound never to throw our hands up in despair lest the future of our society becomes miserable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr. Okudzeto consequently called on all leaders to take a look at the demands of the time and to forge a common front to tackle such issues.<\/p>\n
