Dar es Salaam — The national team departs for Shanghai today ahead of the 14th Fina World Swimming Championship that gets underway on Saturday.

Speaking with The Citizen yesterday, Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) general secretary Noel Kiunsi said the team will constitute three swimmers.Kiunsi expressed his optimism that the trio would win respect for Tanzania considering preparations they have undergone.

“It’s a big event where they will face a tough challenge from top swimmers from around the world, but I’m confident that they will bag some medals,” he said. The swimmers who are expected to fly the national flag high in the two week event are: Magdalena Moshi, Gouri Kotecha and Ammaar Ghadiyali.

The trio, with a wide international experience, have had six weeks of training at the International School of Tanganyika (IST) under the tutelage of Alex Mwaipasa and Ramadhani Namkoveka.

“The trainers succeeded in building swimmers’ strength, stamina and flexibility, which I believe will give them an edge during the China event,” he observed.Kiunsi added: “All swimmers are in high spirits for the world mission and are looking forward to defying the odds.”

Mwaipasa echoed Kiunsi’s words, adding that it is high time Tanzania’s presence in the championship was felt by winning medals.”Our swimmers have prepared well and have the desired experience in the events of such magnitude, therefore we’ve placed high hopes on them,” Mwaipasa underscored.

The swimmers took part in the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games, but failed to win a single medal. Thus it remains to be seen whether they have really gained the said experience to win.
