Goal.com understands.

The midfielder had looked set to feature in Spurs’ first game of pre-season in South Africa amid a summer of speculation over his future following two failed bids from Chelsea.

Modric, 25, is believed to have been carrying an ankle problem for the past week and he will now not feature against the Kaizer Chiefs in Polokwane. Tottenham hope the playmaker will be fit enough to play some part in the fixture against Orlando Pirates on Tuesday.

Modric’s injury comes just days after he submitted a formal transfer request, which was promptly dismissed by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. The Croatian has publicly declared his desire to leave White Hart Lane for Stamford Bridge this summer but Spurs insist he will not be sold after rejected bids of £22 million and £27m from Chelsea.

Modric travelled to South Africa despite his transfer request and assistant manager Kevin Bond has praised his attitude in training. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is due to join the squad on Sunday and has spoken of his hope that the tour will help Modric ‘get on with it’.

Chelsea are expected to return with an improved offer worth in excess of £30m before their pre-season tour of the Far East starts on Thursday but Levy is adamant the former Dinamo Zagreb man is not for sale.

Spurs are likely to fine Modric two weeks’ wages for his outburst in the Croatian press last weekend in which he labelled Levy ‘arrogant’ and stated the Spurs chief broke a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ to sell him to a bigger club this summer – a claim which the club have since denied.

Modric, who cost Tottenham ￡16.5m in the summer of 2008, described his ‘dream’ of playing for Chelsea, adding he wants to play in the Champions League next season and challenge for trophies.

Chelsea are understood to have prepared a wage package worth ￡130,000-a-week for Modric, which dwarfs the ￡45,000 weekly salary he currently earns at White Hart Lane.
