Taking a team to Nigeria to play Enyimba is like “going into a den of lions”, according to Al Hilal coach Milutin “Micho” Sredrojevic. That is the challenge which the Sudanese giants face in their opening game of the African Champions League group stage on Sunday.

Micho says he knows his team will face a “hostile” atmosphere but is confident of getting something from the game. “If I don’t believe…it would be better not to travel,” he told the BBC.

“We know we are playing against a team which will have a huge advantage of the home crowd – but we will use all possible means to expose weak points of their team and to try to get a good result,” the coach said. Getting points away from home is central to qualifying for the semi-finals of the competition, according to the Serbian boss.

“Mathematics is very simple in any group of the Champions League – you need to win all your home matches and from the road look for three or more points,” he said. Hilal and Enyimba are joined by Raja Casablanca of Morocco and Coton Sport of Cameroon in Group A of this year’s competition and follow up the trip to Aba with two home games – so a point against Enyimba will go a long way towards seeing Hilal make the last four of the tournament. But the challenge will not be easy and Micho acknowledges the strengths of this weekend’s opponents.

“In 16 home matches they didn’t concede even one goal in the Nigerian Premier League,” he said. “This is very tough team to play – a team which has an iron defence, a creative midfield and a sharp attack. We are going to play very tactically because I have followed Enyimba for a long time and I know everything about them.”

In the weekend’s other game in this group, Raja Casablanca host Coton Sport on Saturday.

Group B contains the six-times former champions Al Ahly of Egypt, Wydad Casablanca of Morocco, Tunisian giants Esperance and Mouloudia Alger of Algeria.
