The meeting, The Moment learnt, was conveyed to find an amicable resolution of the crisis arising from last year’s bid process that produced MTN as winner, but challenged by Globacom, which claimed the bid process was fraught with irregularities.

The title sponsorship was subsequently with- drawn from MTN and the company went to court challenging the propriety of nullification of its sponsorship rights.

Speaking in an inter-view with our correspondent in Abuja, a member of the NPL board, Akin Akinbobola, was evasive when asked whether MTN would be confirmed as league sponsor should it go ahead to drop the court case. He, however, said the NPL was doing every- thing possible to resolve the issue.

According to him, the board will continue to meet over the issue and would announce the winner. “Yes we met with them and things are get- ting near completion. We just need to get down to it next week (this week).

“The reason for the postponement of the meeting is to enable the communication company withdraw its case from the court and to enable the sponsorship deal take off effectively. So, it is expected that MTN is going ahead to withdraw the case and poised for the show this time around,” Akinbobola said.

He continued: “Our meeting was not just that of the sponsorship deal alone, it involved all the political quagmire in the running of the league and we have resolved to bring them to a stop.

The board has agreed that this will in no way help the development of the league.

We have this leadership problem in the NPL; that of the sponsorship is also there, so we need to be up and doing to get things working. We should find a way forward to navigate the things here.”

Meanwhile, information filtering into The Moment, had it that the NPL board, has mandated MTN to with- draw its case filed against the NPL over the failure to se- cure the right early this year.

<fieldset>
<legend align="center">More News on allAfrica.com</legend>
</fieldset>

AllAfrica – All the Time

More here:
Nigeria: Premier League Pressurises MTN to Drop Court Case

The Moment (London) Idu Jude 13 July 2011 Abuja — Mobile telecommunication company, MTN, would have to discontinue a lawsuit challenging the nullification of sponsorship rights to the Premier League awarded to it by the Nigerian Premier League (NPL), if the company hopes to earn title sponsorship of the league.
