{"id":460577,"date":"2011-07-14T05:45:47","date_gmt":"2011-07-14T05:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/07\/14\/lagos-floods-house-asks-president-to-sign-climate-change-bill\/"},"modified":"2011-07-14T05:45:47","modified_gmt":"2011-07-14T05:45:47","slug":"lagos-floods-house-asks-president-to-sign-climate-change-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/07\/14\/lagos-floods-house-asks-president-to-sign-climate-change-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagos Floods &#8211; House Asks President to Sign Climate Change Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"33.9724547664\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisdaylive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/thisday180.jpg\" alt=\"This Day (Lagos)\" title=\"Visit This Day (Lagos)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Onwuka Nzeshi<\/p>\n<p>14 July 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Following the deadly floods that swept across Lagos in the last few days, the House of Representatives Wednesday urged President Goodluck Jonathan to assent to the National Climate Change Commission Bill which was passed by the National Assembly last year.<\/p>\n<p>The move to step up measures to combat the flooding of the country&#8217;s former capital city came same day the House voted in favour of an investigation into the level of compliance of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) with the Federal Character principle enshrined in Section 153 of the 1999 Constitution (As Amended) over the past 12 years.<\/p>\n<p>It has also commissioned a probe into the &#8220;secret and illegal&#8221; concession agreement between the Federal Ministry of Finance and Single Windows Systems and Technology (SWST) Limited during the recent transition period when the Executive Council of the Federation was yet to be constituted.<\/p>\n<p>The lower chamber of the central parliament said the flooding which had claimed several lives and destroyed invaluable properties must be tackled frontally and with utmost commitment to avert further losses. In the interim, the House has charged the Federal Ministry of Environment to devote part of the ecological fund under its care to tackling the flooding.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Lagos State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded the immediate resignation of Gov.
