Abuja \u2013 The Minister of\u00a0 Works, Mr Mike Onolememan, on Tuesday gave an assurance that a master plan for the nation\u2019s highways would be developed to enhance infrastructure planning and design.<\/p>\n

Onolememan, who said this\u00a0 in Abuja while addressing management staff\u00a0 of\u00a0 the ministry, called for retreats involving\u00a0 staff who would be involved in the development of the master plan.<\/p>\n

He said the ministry would play a key role in President Goodluck Jonathan\u2019s transformation agenda and urged all the staff to be involved bearing in mind the ministry\u2019s strategic position.<\/p>\n

Onolememan said\u00a0 the ministry\u2019s major challenges were planning, design and identification of green areas, adding that\u00a0 they would be addressed accordingly.<\/p>\n

The minister expressed sadness over the huge sums of money awarded every year for projects that were often abandoned.<\/p>\n

\u201c Every year, large sums of money are being paid for contracts and at the end we have nothing to account for it,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Onolememan, who said that the ministry would discourage abandonment of\u00a0 projects, appealed to contractors to ensure completion of\u00a0 their projects.<\/p>\n

Mr Bashir Yuguda, the Minister of\u00a0 State in the ministry, also commended the management staff\u00a0 for ensuring\u00a0 service delivery.<\/p>\n

He canvassed\u00a0 the need for involvement of\u00a0 indigenous contractors in project execution as well as the use of direct labour. (NAN)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
