{"id":453067,"date":"2011-07-04T10:57:07","date_gmt":"2011-07-04T10:57:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/07\/04\/%e2%80%98enforce-policy-on-investment-in-cotton-industry%e2%80%99\/"},"modified":"2011-07-04T10:57:07","modified_gmt":"2011-07-04T10:57:07","slug":"enforce-policy-on-investment-in-cotton-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/07\/04\/enforce-policy-on-investment-in-cotton-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Enforce policy on investment in cotton industry\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"104.512761021\">\n<p>You Are Here: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghanabusinessnews.com\">Home<\/a> \u00bb <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghanabusinessnews.com\/category\/investment\/\" title=\"View all posts in Investment\" rel=\"category tag\">Investment<\/a> \u00bb \u2018Enforce policy on investment in cotton industry\u2019<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span>Page last updated at Monday, July 4, 2011 10:10 AM \/\/ <\/span><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghanabusinessnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Cotton.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-25046\" title=\"Cotton\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ghanabusinessnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/Cotton.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a>The Head of Cotton Production of Armajaro Cotton Ghana Limited, Mr Ismail Lansah, has urged the government to rigidly enforce its policy on strategic investment in the cotton industry as a way of helping to revamp it.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that there were \u201cintruders\u201d in the cotton industry who were, sabotaging the government\u2019s efforts at revamping the industry and eventually scaring away strategic investors.<\/p>\n<p>He further said investors such as Olam Ghana Limited, Armajaro Cotton Ghana Limited and Wienco Ghana Limited were the key strategic investors tasked to help revamp the industry by cultivating not less than 60,000 hectares of cotton this year.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lansah was speaking at a day\u2019s workshop on network building for cotton farmers in Tamale.<\/p>\n<p>Forty farmers from the three northern regions attended the workshop.<\/p>\n<p>They discussed topics such as organising cotton farmers for higher productivity in Ghana \u2013 Challenges and prospects, group formation and dynamics, perspectives for policy advocacy and networking among cotton farmers, as well as effective \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 engagement with duty bearers.<\/p>\n<p>The General Agricultural Workers\u2019 Union (GAWU) of the Ghana Trades Union Congress organised the workshop in collaboration with Action Aid Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lansah stated that the intruders were a group of companies which provided low quality seeds to farmers and purchased cotton from farmers they had riot supported with inputs.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, strategic investors had invested nearly $2 million in the industry, adding that Armajaro, which was one of the investors, had employed 98 technical staff with 18,200 farming units.<\/p>\n<p>He said the attitude of farmers towards the cultivation of cotton was a contributory factor to the decline in cotton production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEighty per cent of cotton farmers treat the cultivation of the crop as a part time job;
