THE Zimbabwe Cricket board has fired the selection panel and replaced it with a new one in an attempt to turn the fortunes of the national team and add vibrancy to the panel.<\/p>\n

Convenor of selectors Alistair Campbell was spared as the board wielded the axe on David Mutendera and John Rennie to replace them with the vocal Givemore Makoni and experienced coach Kevin Curran.<\/p>\n

The decision to relieve the two of their duties was one of many moves by the board in their last meeting on Friday to effect changes that would hopefully see results improve at the top level as the national team continues to disappoint. The same meeting replaced Elton Chigumbura with Brendon Taylor as national captain.<\/p>\n

According to sources close to board members it was felt that Mutendera and Rennie had to be replaced as the board surveyed the wreckage of this year’s International Cricket Council World Cup where the team was a huge let down after so much expectation.<\/p>\n

Makoni, who is the chief executive officer for Southern Rocks, is not new to the national team having worked as a team manager before. Curran sealed second new job inside two weeks having been appointed new Mashonaland Eagles coach. He has been working at Interfin Cricket Academy of late.<\/p>\n

He has also coached the national team before and still offers advice whenever the national team is in camp.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile the Zimbabwe Xl team will be hoping for a change in fortune this morning when they take on South Africa “A” after a meek batting display against Australia where they fell 90 runs short of a 233 winning target set by the young tourists in the first match of the Coca Cola Challenge Triangular series played at the Harare Sports Club on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Only Hamilton Masakadza showed some resolve with a half century which never got any meaningful backing.<\/p>\n

In his first match as captain, Brendan Taylor fell for 17 after starting his innings with promise.<\/p>\n

But today the team is presented with another opportunity to win over their doubters and they will be hoping the bowlers will be on tune just like on Wednesday when Christopher Mpofu surprised the opponents who were braced for some spin headache.<\/p>\n

Zimbabwe will seek to improve their batting especially when facing spin as they struggled under Nathan Lyon’s attack. South Africa “A” has a strong squad themselves and it will be no mean task for Zimbabwe to achieve a turnaround in the series.Changes are likely especially in the batting line-up with former captain Tatenda Taibu a strong possibility to replace Regis Chakabva who was the keeper on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
