We have already discussed \u2018lying-in-state\u2019 as an idiomatic phrase, unchangeable and immutable, subject to its own rules as an idiom, and not to the general rules of language.<\/p>\n<p>As a funeral activity, the family of the dead man may lay the body on the bed: The body will be laid on a very beautiful bed, and their efforts will be acknowledged by the thousands of mourners who will throng to see the body lying in state.<\/p>\n<p>After some wailing, church service, traditional ceremonies, the pouring of libation and the firing of musketry (if the person is a chief of some sort), the body will be interred. \u2018Inter\u2019 should not be confused with \u2018intern\u2019.\u00a0 Neither should \u2018interment\u2019 be confused with \u2018internment\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Interment\u2019 is the act of putting a dead body into a grave or a tomb.\u00a0 The word \u2018interment\u2019 also refers to \u2018burial\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Internment\u2019 is the noun for the verb, \u2018to intern\u2019 which means to confine within the limits of a country or a place, e.g.\u00a0 At the outbreak of the war, some German troops were interned in France as enemy aliens.<\/p>\n<p>An \u2018intern\u2019 is a student in a professional field who receives in-service-training under experienced supervision.<\/p>\n<p>There is so much phraseology that announces the death of people:\u00a0 At Rest; Home Call; Obituary; In Loving Memory of; Gracious Home Call; Transition; In Gloriam, Celebration of Life; Call to Glory; Called to Glory; Call into Glory; Glorious Home Call; Funeral Invitation; Funeral Announcement.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the programme line-up, one would expect to see \u2018interment\u2019 (<strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong>: \u2018internment\u2019).\u00a0 Almost all the newspapers in Ghana are guilty of this, using \u2018internment\u2019 (<strong><em>wrongly<\/em><\/strong>) for \u2018interment\u2019.\u00a0 The word \u2018internment\u2019 has no business in funeral announcements.\u00a0 Whereas \u2018inter\u2019 and \u2018interment\u2019 deal with dead bodies, \u2018intern\u2019 and \u2018internment\u2019 deal with living persons.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Wake\u2019 is an occasion when people gather, traditionally held at night (or at dawn) to remember the dead person; it is an occasion for the singing of \u2018dirges\u2019 and the narration of \u2018funeral oratory\u2019.\u00a0 According to Annor Nimako (Mind Your Language: 2004), the expression is \u2018wake\u2019 <strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong> \u2018wake-keeping\u2019 which is a loan from the \u2018mother tongue\u2019 (Akan: P\u03b5si; Ga, Kp\u03b5shi).<\/p>\n<p>Thus, \u2018wake will be held on \u2026\u2019 <strong><em>or<\/em><\/strong> \u2018There will be no wake;<\/p>\n<p>What about \u2018memorial service\u2019? Kofi Sey sees \u2018thanksgiving service\u2019 as associated with \u2018memorial service\u2019.\u00a0 A \u2018memorial service\u2019 will definitely include a \u2018thanksgiving\u2019.\u00a0 It might, therefore, be tautologous to have a \u2018Memorial and Thanksgiving Service\u2019.\u00a0 It would simply be \u2018Memorial Service\u2019.\u00a0 After the \u2018Memorial Service\u2019, the family members will be free to thank the sympathizers.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Thanksgiving\u2019 means the expression of thanks or gratitude, especially to God.\u00a0 It is also a public celebration; marked with religious services, e.g.\u00a0\u00a0 He offered prayers in thanksgiving for his safe arrival.\u00a0 \u2018Thanksgiving Day\u2019 is a holiday (originally set apart for feasting and thanksgiving to God, celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States of America and on the second Monday in October in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>What about the expression of regret over the death of someone.\u00a0 It might be proper to say, for example, \u2018We announce with regret the sudden death of Mr. XYZ which sad event occurred on \u2026\u2019 OR Mr. XYZ whose death we are celebrating today \u2026\u2019\u00a0 Thus, it would be improper to say, for example, \u2018We announce with regret the sudden death of XYZ whose sad event occurred on \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Some printers and newspapers say they publish the announcements as they come, without editing.\u00a0 Therefore, before one goes to the printer or a newspaper to have a funeral announcement made for him, he must take note of the following:\u00a0 Wake will be held on \u2026 (<strong><em>or<\/em><\/strong> there will be no wake).\u00a0 Lying in state \u2026 The body will lie in state on \u2026 Interment:\u00a0 (or burial) at the \u2026 Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>Memorial Service: Sunday \u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>By Africanus Owusu-Ansah<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>More:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyguideghana.com\/?p=18476\" title=\"Deaths And Funeral Messages (3)\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deaths And Funeral Messages (3)<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> \u201cFriends, Romans, countrymen, lend me, your ears.\u00a0 I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.\u00a0 The evil that men do lives after them.\u00a0 The good is oft interred with their bones; so let it be with Caesar\u201d.
