Anumber of residents in the Sunyani Municipality in the Brong Ahafo Region, have appealed to delegates and supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to desist from any acts that will mar the July 8 Congress or disturb the peace and tranquility that Ghanaians are currently enjoying.<\/p>\n
They also reminded supporters of the two contestants for the flagbearership and leadership position of the NDC that, they belonged to the same family and so they should not engage in any acts that were likely to disintegrate the party after the July 8 to July 10, 2011 congress, scheduled for the Sunyani Coronation Park.<\/p>\n
In an interview with the Daily Graphic in Sunyani, the residents also appealed to the security agencies to act professionally and avoid intimidating the people at the congress venue and others in the municipality.<\/p>\n
Nana Yaw Amoako II, a Sunyani-based contractor, noted that, the current friction within the party should not pave way for an unsuccessful congress, pointing out that, the party members should remain as one people as they did during the formation of the NDC.<\/p>\n
He said if the supporters did not refrain from the current bickering, it would not help Ghana’s democracy, which he said, was not between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but rather embraced all the other political parties and Ghanaians in general.<\/p>\n
Nana Amoako suggested that, even at the congress grounds, one of the contestants could step down in the supreme interest of the party, adding, however that, the security should be fair and handle matters professionally to end the congress peacefully.<\/p>\n
The Brong Ahafo Regional Secretary of the NPP, Mr Alfred Anye advised NDC members to do things devoid of violence, threats and intimidation, saying that, they should eschew camping of delegates and rather allow them to vote according to their conscience at the congress.<\/p>\n
He observed that, anyone of the contestants who emerges the winner will work in the interest of the party, adding that, for the NPP, ‘All what we are preparing for is that we have a match against the NDC but not Prof. Mills or Nana Konadu and our strategy is finally to capture power from the NDC’.<\/p>\n
The NPP regional secretary suggested that, security must be beefed up in Sunyani to contain any eventuality and also protect lives and property in the municipality, especially the Coronation Park, which was a national asset.<\/p>\n
Miss Adwoa Linder, a sales girl said, the people in Sunyani needed peace and so the delegates to the congress should not do anything that would disturb the prevailing congenial atmosphere.<\/p>\n
She stressed that, the delegates and supporters belonged to the same party and so they should remain as such and do away with the ‘FONKA’, ‘OLONKA’ and ‘GAME’ slogans.<\/p>\n
Papa Nii Ansah, a banker, also urged the NDC to exercise utmost restraint at the congress because according to him, as a party in power, any untoward behaviour which they engaged in, would dent the fortunes of the party in the 2012 general elections.<\/p>\n
A security man, Mr Kwabena Owusu, likened the NDC congress to a vacant stool in a royal family which needed to be occupied, saying, it then did not mean they should engage in fisticuffs or insult against each other.<\/p>\n
He also called on the security personnel to remain fair and firm but not to intimidate any faction before, during and after the congress and more so, residents of the municipality.<\/p>\n
Mr Ibrahim Alhassan, a taxi driver, however urged that, security should be tight but then the personnel should act professionally to ensure a trouble-free congress, stressing that, delegates to the congress ought to exercise patience throughout the proceedings at the congress.<\/p>\n
Miss Felicia Nyame, a seller of cell phone recharge cards, also advised that supporters and delegates should not engage in any activity that could degenerate into violence but rather ensure that the congress ended successfully for Ghana to progress.<\/p>\n
She called on the police to protect all the people but not to hesitate to arrest those who wanted to foment trouble.<\/p>\n
Mr Alfred Morny, an optician, noted that, the mudslinging, quarrels and unnecessary exchanges in the media by NDC party members did not augur well for the stability of the NDC, saying that, those who wanted to create disunity within the party should not be entertained.<\/p>\n
He said the delegates and supporters should accept the end results of the congress and rally solidly behind whoever emerged as the flag bearer and leader of the NDC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
