Washington \u2014 Organizers of the African Institute for Remittances Project would like to hear your views on remittances in Africa – how they are sent and used, challenges, costs and alternatives. An online survey to collect those views is available on the African Union website. In addition to specific questions, the survey invites remittance senders and receivers to engage one another in lively discussion and to share knowledge.<\/p>\n

The survey is part of an ongoing program of consultations and dialogue with project stakeholders.<\/p>\n

Its drafters say they hope to hear from Africans on the continent and in the Diaspora about their experiences sending and receiving remittances. The input provided will be analyzed and will help determine how to best support African countries seeking to maximize remittances.<\/p>\n

An African institute to harness remittances<\/strong><\/p>\n

The AIR project is an initiative aimed at helping the African Union Commission (AUC) establish an African Institute for Remittances. The project is a partnership between the World Bank and select development partners including the European Commission (EC), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).<\/p>\n

The project is funded by an EU1.6 million grant from the European Commission to the World Bank, which is responsible for overall implementation in close collaboration with the AUC.<\/p>\n

The core objectives of the AIR project are to facilitate the process leading to the creation of the Institute; and to build the capacity of the Member States of the African Union, remittance senders and recipients, and other stakeholders to develop and implement concrete strategies and operational instruments to use remittances as development tools for poverty reduction.<\/p>\n

There is a rising recognition that it is critical to create an institution dedicated to supporting African countries in their quest to better leverage the estimated US$40 billion in yearly remittances flows to the continent.<\/p>\n

Consultations provide valuable feedback<\/strong><\/p>\n

In an online forum hosted by AIR project organizers on June 1, more than 150 people gathered to share their experiences and to discuss existing challenges and the lack of transparency in remittance services. Online viewers also offered their suggestions for the future role and organization of the proposed Institute. These suggestions ranged from practical ways to engage the private sector, to furthering the use of mobile technology in remittance collection.<\/p>\n

“It would be interesting if AIR creates platforms to encourage the development of small and medium enterprises, with the contribution of the Diaspora”, shared one participant.<\/p>\n

A second consultation will take place July 7-8 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and will include government representatives from African Union member countries, policy makers, members of the private sector and Diaspora organizations.<\/p>\n

The aim of this next consultation is to develop recommendations and a concrete action plan for the establishment, structure and administration of the proposed Institute. Organizers hope that it will help further the project objectives to build the capacity of African Union Member States to leverage remittances through the sharing of technical knowledge on policies and a regulatory framework for the remittance sector.<\/p>\n
