{"id":451816,"date":"2011-07-01T14:28:57","date_gmt":"2011-07-01T14:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/07\/01\/airstrip-upgrade-to-boost-miraa-trade\/"},"modified":"2011-07-01T14:28:57","modified_gmt":"2011-07-01T14:28:57","slug":"airstrip-upgrade-to-boost-miraa-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/07\/01\/airstrip-upgrade-to-boost-miraa-trade\/","title":{"rendered":"Airstrip Upgrade to Boost Miraa Trade"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"27.1212630165\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nation.co.ke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/nation180.jpg\" alt=\"The Nation (Nairobi)\" title=\"Visit The Nation (Nairobi)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mwangi Muiruri<\/p>\n<p>30 June 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>Nairobi \u2014 Miraa traders in Meru and Tharaka-Nithi counties are gearing up for more profit margins, once the Isiolo Airport becomes a reality.<\/p>\n<p>They are upbeat that the high cost of road transport to Nairobi will reduce drastically, as they start airlifting their produce both to local and foreign markets.<\/p>\n<p>Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is currently upgrading the airstrip into a fully-fledged airport at the cost of Sh610 million.<\/p>\n<p>The airport is among Vision 2030 projects, which will see Isiolo Town open up as a resort centre complete with casinos, international filming facilities and other amenities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sleeping economies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The amenities will jump-start the sleeping economies of neighbouring areas.<\/p>\n<p>Miraa picking and packaging is rendered difficult since it is perishable and has to reach the market and be disposed of within 96 hours.<\/p>\n<p>The region produces Kangeta, which is top-grade miraa and is mainly for export.<\/p>\n<p>Other types include Gisa and Kolombo, which are consumed locally in Nairobi, Lamu and Mombasa.<\/p>\n<p>The best quality of miraa comes from Nyambene Hills.
