{"id":451526,"date":"2011-07-01T07:24:48","date_gmt":"2011-07-01T07:24:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/07\/01\/zambia-siliya-explains-why-mmd-will-win\/"},"modified":"2011-07-01T07:24:48","modified_gmt":"2011-07-01T07:24:48","slug":"zambia-siliya-explains-why-mmd-will-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/07\/01\/zambia-siliya-explains-why-mmd-will-win\/","title":{"rendered":"Zambia: Siliya Explains Why MMD Will Win"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"64.0262327416\">\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.times.co.zm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/img\/static\/publishers\/minibanners\/timeszambia180.jpg\" alt=\"The Times of Zambia (Ndola)\" title=\"Visit The Times of Zambia (Ndola)\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>1 July 2011<\/p>\n<hr class=\"thin clear\" \/>\n<p>MMD chairperson for information and publicity Dora Siliya has said the ruling party will win the 2011 general elections because Zambians appreciate the massive development the MMD Government has recorded and are not ready to experiment with another party.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Siliya said the MMD Government should be judged on the basis of its performance since it took over power in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a media cocktail at Hotel Inter-Continental in Lusaka on Wednesday evening organised to share the party&#8217;s achievements in the last two decades, Ms Siliya said the MMD Government had performed beyond many people&#8217;s expectations and was assured of convincing victory.<\/p>\n<p>She said while party leaders had been changing, Zambia was currently under capable people who were working hard as they had taken over from those who fought for multi-partyism.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Siliya said former president Frederick Chiluba launched an economic blue print for Zambia when he introduced liberalisation policies that ended long queues for essential basic commodities in Zambia.<\/p>\n<p>She said when late president Levy Mwanawasa took over power in 2001 he fought corruption and added value to the money and the economy in general, while President Banda had continued with all those policies.<\/p>\n<p>She said Mr Banda had added a new dimension of constructing infrastructure while economic growth had been recorded at above six per cent for two consecutive years.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Siliya said the mobile hospitals introduced in Zambia had performed well and that 325 clinics were under construction countrywide.<\/p>\n<p>She said an increase in the number of jobs being created had been demonstrated by the incremental rise in the Pay-As-You-Earn, which was now at K3.5 trillion per year compared to K2.5 trillion in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Zambia&#8217;s economy had continued to receive accolades from reputable foreign institutions such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, while former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo also showered praises on Zambia for the positive record.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Siliya said investment in the mines had grown to unprecedented levels while the prevalence of malaria had been reduced by 66 per cent, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) report.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to reduce poverty had started with the increased farmer input support programme which had 250,000 beneficiaries about three years ago and was now close to one million.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Siliya said Patriotic Front (PF) president Michael Sata&#8217;s flip-flopping on many national issues had made him a politically unstable leader and showed his lack of vision for Zambia.<\/p>\n<p>She said the PF leader lacked a specific vision following his now &#8220;trademark&#8221; change of positions on important matters.<\/p>\n<p>The function was attended by, among others, national campaign committee members Muhabi Lungu and Boniface Kawimbe and National Secretary Richard Kachingwe.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Siliya said around 2007 and 2008, Mr Sata pressed for a reversal of the windfall tax system that was introduced in the mining sector but had now started calling for the restoration of the same taxes.<\/p>\n<p>She said the same happened with regard to the late president Dr Chiluba before the 2006 presidential elections when he promised to drop all corruption cases the former leader was facing, but in 2008 Mr Sata changed and threatened to arrest Dr Chiluba.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<fieldset>\n<legend align=\"center\"><strong>More News on allAfrica.com<\/strong><\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<p>AllAfrica &#8211;
