dedicate the 2011 general elections to the two late Zambian leaders, Levy Mwanawasa and Frederick Chiluba and called for peace during the polls.

Mr Banda said in Ndola yesterday that the two leaders had always wished peace for Zambia at all times, as could be seen in all the speeches that they used to deliver.

He said this when he addressed a crowd that welcomed him on arrival at Ndola International Airport for a three-day working visit.

The president said Zambians should bury their differences and forgive each other’s wrongs because that was what the two leaders always wanted.

“I want to commend you for the good send-off that you gave Dr Chiluba, especially that he was from here,” Mr Banda said.

He said he had received many phone calls to appreciate the manner in which Zambians and the Government mourned and buried Dr Chiluba, one of whom was United States Ambassador to Zambia Mark Storella.

Mr Banda said that reflected the Zambian people’s way of giving respect to the dead, whether old or young, poor or rich.

“So let us as Zambians dedicate these elections to our fallen heroes, who always wished us well in all their speeches,” he said.

Mr Banda, who is scheduled to officially open the Zambia International Trade Fair (ZITF) tomorrow, also said it would be easy for the ruling party to win this year’s general elections because it had worked harder to facilitate national development than at any other time.

He said the party this time around had answers to any queries, even from the opposition political parties, because it could point to the various development projects it had undertaken.

The president urged MMD members to remain calm and focused on campaigns and winning the elections for the party to advance developmental programmes for the benefit of the general public.

He said members should allow the party leadership to guide them in the process to select parliamentary and local government candidates.

The party should remain united even in the adoption period and that those that opted to leave because they had not been picked as candidates were not genuine MMD members.

“Be proud of your party and do not get tired because we are almost at the touchline even if I have not yet announced the date, we should be ready,” he said.

He also said ZITF had grown bigger with more exhibitors than last year and that this showed that Zambia was doing well economically.

Copperbelt MMD chairperson Joseph Chilambwe commended President Banda and First Lady Thandiwe for ensuring Zambia mourned and buried Dr Chiluba in a dignified manner.

Mr Chilambwe said that was an indication that Mr Banda was a great leader, more so that he had even managed to handle Dr Mwanawasa’s funeral.

<fieldset>
<legend
