Football legend Andy Cole is in town for a new mentorship programme for up and coming Kenyan sporting stars. Andy said, “I’m here for the launch of a new program Airtel Rising Stars that gives an opportunity to young talent to get into football.”

The Airtel Rising Stars is a Pan Africa-wide program that will provide a platform for upcoming soccer talent under the age of 17 to showcase their skills to leading scouts, coaches and earn the opportunity to upgrade their football talents. In Kenya, the initiative targets boys and Girls in secondary schools across the country.

The partnership with Manchester United is part of a four year sponsorship and mobile content agreement signed last December that allows select Airtel operations to tap into the football club’s deep reservoir of technical resources and sports marketing expertise.

Andy who works as a forwards coach at Huddersfield Town under his former Newcastle United and Fulham team-mate Lee Clark said that he “hasn’t has a chance to watch any Kenyan matches because every time you turn on the TV its the premiership matches that are on.”

Adding that if he had a chance of coaching any team, he would choose the Brazilian National team. However, Andy’s son Devante has signed with Man U’s crosstown rivals Manchester City. The 16-year old has penned a three-year deal with City, following his famous father’s footsteps into the Premier League, and joining one of his dad’s former clubs.

Andy’s take on his son’s new football gig was, “I take it in the chin and support my son.” More of this interview will be aired tomorrow on Gossip Girl with Ruhila Adatia.

Airtel Rising Stars will take off at the provincial finals of the Kenya Secondary Schools games held across all provinces countrywide from July 13 to 23 while the national finals will be held in Nairobi between August 9 to 13.
