{"id":451349,"date":"2011-06-30T19:19:59","date_gmt":"2011-06-30T19:19:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ghanamma.net\/2011\/06\/30\/concern-over-journalists-arrest-in-ethiopia\/"},"modified":"2011-06-30T19:19:59","modified_gmt":"2011-06-30T19:19:59","slug":"concern-over-journalists-arrest-in-ethiopia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2011\/06\/30\/concern-over-journalists-arrest-in-ethiopia\/","title":{"rendered":"Concern over journalists&#8217; arrest in Ethiopia"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Amnesty International, the UK-based\u00a0rights group,\u00a0has\u00a0voiced concern over the arrest of nine people, including\u00a0two journalists and two opposition party members, in\u00a0Ethiopia on suspicion of terrorist offences.<\/p>\n<p>Woubishet Taye, a deputy-editor for the weekly <em>Awramba Times<\/em>, and Reyot Alemu from the <em>Feteh<\/em> newspaper who were arrested on July 19 and 21, were among those detained.<\/p>\n<p>Demelash Woldemikael, the assistant commissioner of Ethiopia&#8217;s federal police,\u00a0said:\u00a0&#8220;The group was caught while plotting to sabotage electricity and telephone lines in an attempt to wreak havoc in the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Further investigation has also revealed that they acted to recruit others to carry out terrorist activities with support from the Eritrean government and other anti-peace groups.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Demelash said the group will be charged upon completion of investigations.<\/p>\n<p>The detentions prompted\u00a0the media watchdogs the\u00a0Committee to Protect Journalists\u00a0(CPJ) and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/ethiopia-two-journalists-arrested-as-28-06-2011,40534.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reporters Without Borders (RSF) to call for their immediate release.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The pretext of counter-terrorism being used to silence dissent, particularly among groups traditionally critical of the government such as political opposition parties and the private press is worrying,&#8221; Michelle Kagari, Amnesty International&#8217;s deputy Africa director, said on Thursday in a\u00a0statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The detainees must be granted full and prompt access to legal representatives and their families.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the Paris-based RSF said: &#8220;The mystery surrounding their detention is unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These shady methods suggest a desire to stifle outspoken media and impose a news blackout on government abuses by scaring journalists and pressuring them to censor themselves on a regular basis.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shimelis Kemal, a government spokesman,\u00a0said their incarceration had no link with their political affiliation or their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This has nothing to do with their reporting or political activity. They were arrested because they plotted to carry out terrorist activities and recruited others to join them,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anti-terrorism law<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The US-based\u00a0CPJ\u00a0reported on June 24 that journalists covering the activities of Ethiopia&#8217;s opposition figures, or those of the\u00a0Ogadeb\u00a0National Liberation Front (ONLF) rebels, have risked\u00a0prosecution\u00a0since\u00a0the country&#8217;s\u00a0anti-terrorism\u00a0law came into effect in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The law criminalises any reporting authorities deem to &#8216;encourage&#8217; or &#8216;provide moral support&#8217; to groups and causes the government labels as &#8216;terrorists&#8217;,&#8221; Mohamed Keita and Tom Rhodes, CPJ Africa programme staff, reported on the CPJ blog.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ethiopia is a country whose relative stability in the troubled Horn of Africa region is in great part maintained by repression of dissent and ever-increasing restrictions on the freedom of the press.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It receives praise and assistance for its participation in US counterterrorism in Somalia, but for Ethiopian journalists, reporting on terrorism [as defined by their government] without risking jail time has become too risky,&#8221; the\u00a0staff added.<\/p>\n<p>The blog posted, entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpj.org\/blog\/2011\/06\/in-ethiopia-anti-terrorism-law-chills-reporting-on.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;In Ethiopia, anti-terrorism law chills reporting on security&#8221;,\u00a0<\/a>reported that local journalists had revealed that\u00a0it was only acceptable to write about terrorism if it was clearly denounced else &#8220;she or he is taking the risk of any interpretation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Risk of torture&#8217;<br \/><\/strong><br \/>Amnesty International also warned\u00a0on Thursday\u00a0that some of the detainees may be at risk of torture.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0group are being held at Maikelawi \u2013 the Federal Police Crime Investigation and Forensic Department in Addis Ababa &#8211;\u00a0which is reported to be under the command of the National Intelligence and Security Service.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Maikelawi is infamous for the frequent use of torture against pre-trial detainees,&#8221; Kagari said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is troubling that the vaguely defined provisions of the anti-terrorism legislation are being used to suppress legitimate freedom of expression in Ethiopia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopia and Eritrea have often traded tough rhetoric since a 1998-2000 border war.<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi regularly accuses Eritrean leader Issaias Afeworki of supporting opposition and rebel groups in Ethiopia.<\/p>\n<p>Addis Ababa claims its northern neighbour is trying to destabilise the region by backing rebels, while also supporting Islamist\u00a0fighters in Somalia.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"cphBody_lblCountBody\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Excerpt from:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/english.aljazeera.net\/\/news\/africa\/2011\/06\/2011630165542923490.html\" title=\"Concern over journalists' arrest in Ethiopia\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Concern over journalists&#8217; arrest in Ethiopia<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Amnesty International, the UK-based\u00a0rights group,\u00a0has\u00a0voiced concern over the arrest of nine people, including\u00a0two journalists and two opposition party members, in\u00a0Ethiopia on suspicion of terrorist offences.
