\u00a0\u2026urge FG to intervene in boundary crises<\/p>\n

ABUJA-THE House of Representatives yesterday gave the Nigerian Boundary Commission a two-week ultimatum to submit its report on the resolution of the boundary dispute involving some communities in Edo and Delta states.<\/p>\n

The chamber also implored the governors of the states to, as a matter of urgency, employ all means to ensure that the disputes between their border lines were resolved amicably and immediately.<\/p>\n

The Federal Government was also urged to initiate internal security measures involving the mobilization of officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force to check unlawful attacks on rural communities.<\/p>\n

The resolution followed a motion moved by Ndudi Elumelu, representing Aniocha in Delta North, who drew the attention of members to the breach of peace and threat to lives and property as a result of the boundary dispute.<\/p>\n

The dispute, according to him, is between Ewohimi and Ohordua communities in Edo and Idumuje-Ugboko, Idumuje-Unor, Anor Aniofu, Ugbodu, Ukwuzu, Ugboba Ubuluhu, Ogodor and Anioma communities of Delta State.<\/p>\n

Elumelu said the areas had been known to be involved in land disputes for long, which necessitated the involvement of the boundary commission in 2002.<\/p>\n

The former deputy governors of the states were also said to have intervened in the matter.<\/p>\n

But because the boundary commission has failed to come out with its report, the crisis has lingered, as fighting is on going and farming in the communities stalled.<\/p>\n

The House also called on the Federal Government to intervene in the Benue and Nasarawa crisis between farmers and Fulani herdsmen and provide security in the affected areas.<\/p>\n

This followed a motion moved by Emmanuel Jime, through which he drew attention to the crisis which had resulted in maiming, killing and displacement of thousands of people due to dispute over farming and land grazing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
