Ipswich Town<\/a> chief executive Simon Clegg says Sunderland<\/a>‘s bid for Connor Wickham<\/a> exceeded their own valuation of the player.<\/p>\n

The Black Cats saw off competition from Liverpool to sign the England Under-21 international, and Clegg admits that the offer made by Steve Bruce’s side was too good to refuse.<\/p>\n

He told the Ipswich Evening Star<\/em>: “When offers on the table all of a sudden exceed what you believe the player is worth then you have to act.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>“A lot will be triggered by various clauses in the contract. The bottom line is, Paul Jewell will have additional resources.<\/span>

<\/span>\u201cThe important thing is that money is in the bank, to be made available over the forthcoming windows, to make sure we can see progression towards achieving the goal of Premiership status.<\/p>\n

\u201cNegotiations had been going on for some time, and we had serious interest from Sunderland for the last week or 10 days.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe result is that we have a cracking deal for Ipswich Town. I\u2019m very pleased with it. And it\u2019s a good move for Connor as well.”<\/p>\n

The 18-year-old, Ipswich’s youngest ever player, scored 15 goals in 72 appearances for the club and has three caps for England Under-21s.
