the company said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\nToyota has recalled almost 12 million vehicles in the past 18 months.<\/p>\n
The latest recalls are taking place mainly in the US, Japan and Europe, with some in Canada, Australia and South Korea, Toyota said.<\/p>\n
The company said it was “working on obtaining the necessary replacement parts” and would get in touch with customers to get their vehicles inspected soon.<\/p>\n
“The recalls that we announced cover all known problems regarding the component concerned,” Toyota spokesperson Paul Nolasco told the BBC.<\/p>\n
“We apologise for the inconvenience caused to our customers and hope to be able [to fix the problem] as soon as possible,” he added.<\/p>\n
Compounding problems<\/span><\/p>\nThe recall is the latest in a series of setbacks for the Japanese carmaker.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, Toyota announced that it was recalling 1.7 million vehicles globally over concerns about a possible fuel leakage.<\/p>\n
That followed 14 separate recalls for a variety of reasons last year.<\/p>\n
As a result, the carmaker’s reputation for quality and reliability took a hit, especially in America where it was the only major carmaker to see sales fall in 2010.<\/p>\n
Its problems were compounded further by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in March.<\/p>\n
Destruction caused by the disasters resulted in the carmaker suspending production not only at its Japanese factories but also at its overseas units.<\/p>\n
As a result, earlier this month Toyota warned that its profits for the current financial year would fall by a third.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
